Westlands Water District is seeking to fill one Equipment Operator vacancy.

The Equipment Operator is a skilled position in the Civil & Preventive Maintenance Department. This position operates and makes minor adjustments and repairs to a variety of mobile earth-moving and load-lifting equipment which is used in the excavation, construction, maintenance, and repair of water distribution pipelines and canals, roads, embankments, reservoirs, and property, and may direct a crew. The Equipment Operator position will report to the District’s Five Points Field Office; approximately 45 miles southwest of Fresno, CA. Normal work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch.

The duties of the Equipment Operator position include, but are not limited to operating backhoes, road graders, dozers, compactors, other heavy excavation and earth-moving equipment, and Class I vehicles up to 40-ton capacity as required to excavate for repair or replacement of underground pipelines, valves, and concrete structures to a depth of 25 feet; and excavate, construct, surface, and maintain roads, embankments, canals, reservoirs, ditches, pumping plant pads, drainage areas, and properties to a specified grade and slope as required. This position will operate material handling-handling equipment including truck-mounted cranes in order to rig load and unload, and place various types of equipment, such as pumps, motors, valves, and precast concrete structures, and piping. The Equipment Operator may also perform similar physical work typical of a Civil Maintenance Worker or similar staff within the Department.


Education and Experience: Possession of a United States high school diploma, GED, or equivalent and

four (4) years of experience in the operation of a variety of heavy construction equipment including backhoes, rubber-tired or track-type tractors, front-end loaders, motor graders, hydraulic motor cranes, and truck trailer/trailer rig.

Note: Successful completion of a two (2)- year apprenticeship program can be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.

Standard Requirement: Possession of a valid California Class A Driver’s License along with a driving record acceptable to the District’s automobile insurance provider is required. Ability to utilize a respirator during the job duties or under emergency circumstances. Incumbents shall not wear beards, mustaches, sideburns, facial hair or other conditions in such a manner that may prevent or interfere with establishing and maintaining a proper seal of the respiratory facemask. Ability to lift 100 pounds, climb stationary ladders, and work in confined spaces.
