Senior Chemist, Specialty Refinery Products

We are seeking a “hands on” Senior Chemist to support the safe cost-effective commercialization of a variety of new petroleum products. Join an exciting group of skilled scientific, engineering, and operations professionals at this modern specialty oil refinery as they develop disruptive new technologies in solvents, base oils, blended lubricants, metalworking fluids, and specialty hydrocarbon additives for industrial and consumer markets.

Essential Job Functions include:

Collaborate with R&D, Operations, and Sales & Marketing teams to ensure that new products meet customers’ quality, performance, and economic needs

Provide technical support and market applications expertise for specific refinery products, such as new solvents, blended lube oils, specialty waxes, and various other petroleum distillates

Interface with internal and external customers and academia in the definition and development of new product applications

Help provide justification for the highest valued R&D projects for the group

Research, plan, and execute laboratory, pilot, and commercial scale experiments in the development of new products and technologies

Analyze experimental data and testing methods using statistical techniques

Summarize results in technical reports and present findings to technical colleagues and management

Incorporate Process Safety Management (PSM) principles into all daily work activities and serve as a role model to others in this area

Qualifications for this role include:

B.S. or higher in Chemical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, or Chemistry

5+ years in a petroleum product development, applications, or R&D setting within the Oil & Gas, Hydrocarbon Processing, Refining, Petrochemical, or Specialty Chemical industries

Strong knowledge of refinery products/markets, petroleum chemistry, and testing methods

Technical expertise or exposure to typical refinery unit operations including: desalters, distillation towers, cokers, hydrotreaters, fluid catalytic crackers, reformers, strippers, hydrocrackers, alkylation units, etc.

Creativity, ingenuity, and innovative thinking with the desire to solve problems that incorporate chemistry, equipment, hydraulics, and thermodynamics

Experience with pilot plant or commercial scale equipment design and specification of PLCs, DCS, pumps, motor drives, instrumentation & controls, piping, valves, etc. is a plus

Skilled in producing charts, graphs, and technical reports for executive management

Strong data analysis skills with experience using process simulation software such as Aspen, Hysis, Pro/II, Simsci, etc.

Must be proficient with all MS Office software – Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint

Strong knowledge of PSM Safety and Quality practices

Outstanding oral and written communication skills

Clear track record of high achievement

Ability to travel up to 25% to attend customer visits, trade shows, industry seminars, etc.
