Senior Linux/UNIX Administrator

The contract position involves identification of requirements, building, testing, deploying and maintaining consistent and stable UNIX/Linux operating environments for client servers. Partners with customers, vendors

and other dependent IT domains to ensure successful delivery of UNIX/Linux based systems that support business applications and operations.

Ideal candidate is a self-starter with technical leadership experience in enterprise UNIX/Linux operations and skilled in Red Hat Enterprise Linux & VMware. Potential contract to hire.

Major Responsibilities include:

Daily management of Linux/UNIX based servers including monitoring, troubleshooting and break/fix of issues with hardware, operating system, layered software products, and printing.

Participating in 24x7 On-Call rotation

Participating in the management of support contracts for hardware, operating system, layered products, and other software

Participating in and/or leading technical projects

Participating in Abbott integration efforts as required

Executing system change, incident and problem analyses per established procedures.

Resolves escalated technical problems following established tracking procedures.

Responsibility for evaluating outages, reviewing impact of supported systems, and troubleshooting incident resolution

Managing storage volumes on Unix platforms utilizing LVM, ext4 or zfs as needed.

Coordinating major Unix-related change activities during maintenance windows

Effectively identifying user and technical dependencies, risks, and engaging other technical domains to define broader solution sets

Disaster recovery planning and testing as required

Providing technical support for hardware repairs

Deploying security/bug fixes, patches or upgrades as required to maintain hardware/firmware, operating systems, and layered products

Installing, configuring, and maintaining Unix based operating systems in a world-wide enterprise environment primarily consisting of Oracle/Redhat Linux

Managing and enhancing system security in accordance with industry best practices and company policy.

Implementing configuration and security improvements as required.

Providing input to and help manage capacity and long-range planning

Conducting proactive capacity planning, performance monitoring, configuration tuning and technology refresh as required

Ensuring consistency in the management of administrative policies and procedures relative to Unix/Linux based systems

Establishing and maintaining system specific documentation and operational procedures within the domain

Defining standards, guidelines, best practices and produce metrics as directed.

Complying with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments.

Maintaining positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.

Performing other related duties and responsibilities, on occasion, as assigned.

General Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, MIS, and Mathematics, Engineering, Business or area of functional responsibility preferred, or equivalent 5+ years of industry work experience

7+ years of technical experience with Unix/Linux based server operating systems administration in a medium to large complex server environment

Expertise in Red Hat Enterprise Linux system administration, monitoring, maintenance and troubleshooting

Knowledge in Solaris 10/11 administration is an advantage

2-4 years of experience working with virtualization technologies including VMWare

Working knowledge of logical volume management concepts and SAN configuration

RHCE certification or equivalent experience

4-5 years of experience installing, configuring and managing x86 based server hardware and virtual machines

Advanced knowledge of TCPIP and DNS required

Demonstrated ability to handle technical challenges

Willingness to take over responsibilities and gain expertise on new technologies

Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment

Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment and leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects

Strong verbal and written proficiency in English language with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization

Ability to multitask, prioritize and meet deadlines in a timely manner

Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail

Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance
