General Description:

Cardiac Perfusionist shall cover the range of Perfusionist services as would be provided in a state-of-the-art civilian medical treatment facility and the standard of care shall be of a quality, meeting or exceeding currently recognized national standards as established by The American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.


• You shall be responsible for providing Perfusion care, including, but not limited to the support of:

1. Coronary Artery By-pass

2. Aortic Valve Replacement

3. Mitral Valve Replacement

4. Tricuspid Valve Replacement

5. Transmyocardial Laser Revascularization (TMR)

6. Aortic Aneurysm Repair

7. Intra-operative auto-transfusion

8. Intra-aortic balloon counter-pulsation

9. Ventricular assist device troubleshooting

10. Hemo-filtration

11. Myocardial protection, ultra-filtration, cell saver, balloon pump, monitoring heart lung machine, septal defects, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), platelet rich plasma harvesting (PRP)

12. Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), placement of an Impella 2.5 and 5.0, and other duties normally performed within the scope of a Cardiac Perfusionist.

• You shall assist the Cardio-Thoracic service with by-pass surgical cases and valve replacement of various types. You shall perform onsite Perfusion Services in the treatment of care for eligible veteran beneficiaries as referred and authorized by the Cleveland VAMC.

• You shall report information for treatment.

• You shall be responsible to view the patient record within CPRS prior to the surgery to review the surgeon’s plan of care.

• You shall participate in continuous quality improvement activities and meetings with committee participation as required by the VAMC Chief of Service, Chief of Staff, or designee. List all meetings, associated time and frequency.

• You shall attend staff meetings as required by the VAMC Chief of Service, Chief of Staff, or designee.

• You shall complete the appropriate QM/PI documentation pertaining to all procedures, complications and outcome of examinations.

• You shall follow all established patient safety and infection control standards of care. Contractor’s Perfusionist(s) shall make every effort to prevent medication errors, falls, and patient injury caused by acts of commission or omission in the delivery of care.


• Chief Cardiac Perfusionist shall be certified and shall have a minimum of 10 years’ experience and performed a minimum of 2000 clinical cases. Experience shall be demonstrated in the following areas: Open heart surgery, heart lung machine, membrane oxygenation, left/right heart bypass, intra-aortic balloon pumping and centrifugal ventricular assist device.

• Staff / PRN Cardiac Perfusionist shall be certified with at least a minimum of ten (10) years of experience and shall have performed a minimum of 1000 clinical cases.

• You shall be a graduate of an accredited Allied Health Education Program School of Perfusion Technology.

• You shall be certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion.

• You shall demonstrate evidence of meeting continuing education requirements.

• You shall be technically proficient in the skills necessary to fulfill the requirements, including the ability to speak, understand, read and write English fluently.

• You shall provide documents upon request to verify current and ongoing competency, skills, certification and/or licensure related to the provision of care, treatment and/or services performed.

• You shall provide verifiable evidence of all educational and training experiences including any gaps in educational history for all contract personnel(s) and contract personnel (s) shall be responsible for abiding by the Facility's Medical Staff By-Laws, rules, and regulations (referenced herein) that govern medical staff behavior.

• You shall have copies of current Continuing Medical Education (CME).

• You shall have ACLS and BLS.
