JOB SUMMARY

Oversees the ongoing development, implementation, evaluation and coordination of the Clinical Risk Management program with an objective of controlling and minimizing professional liability claims, as well as participating in safety, loss prevention and quality improvement activities. Leads, plans, organizes, communicates and directs Clinical Risk Management activities for risk identification, investigation, prevention and reduction for acute care and critical access hospitals and PHMG clinics. Provides oversight of Clinical Risk Management programs in alignment with our mission and values, and according to regulatory requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Provides leadership for operational effectiveness, personnel management, fiscal accountability and positive relations with both internal and external key stakeholders.

2. Develops and monitors a strategic Clinical Risk Management Program, operating goals, and objectives for Clinical Risk Management. Creates and monitors infrastructure, systems, processes and standards to achieve desired outcomes.

3. Oversees the investigation and analysis of actual or potential adverse events for quality improvement opportunities and corrective action as well as identification of liability/legal action.

4. Provides oversight and timely communication of serious reportable and sentinel events to executive management, regulatory, quality, compliance, legal, department chiefs, public relations, State and other assigned accrediting agencies.

5. Collaborates in directing recruitment, training, development and evaluation of Clinical Risk Management staff. Directs 24/7 clinical risk management coverage/consultation.

6. Oversees the security and legal protection of the electronic reporting and database system for access, dissemination of data, tracking and analysis of occurrences, loss trends and other risk management statistical data and benchmarking where appropriate.

7. Ensures regulatory compliance related to Risk Management and its functions. Directs EMTALA investigations and resolution.

8. Identifies potential areas of compliance vulnerability and risk; develops/implements corrective action plans for resolution of problematic issues and provides guidance on how to avoid or deal with similar situations in the future.

9. Serves in collaborative relationship with Quality, Patient Safety, Medical Affairs and Organizational Integrity to ensure mitigation of risk and optimization of patient safety. Provides risk management responder and RCA support for the Patient Safety Stop initiative.

10. Directs the performance of risk assessments of various departments, PHMG, outpatient services and clinical services to identify areas of potential/actual exposure and implements corrective actions plans, including educational programs.

11. Oversees the investigation by clinical risk managers of all patient/visitor incidents that have the potential for litigation and financial loss. Ensures that all information necessary to prepare for the defense of claims is collected and properly maintained.

12. Designs and presents loss prevention education program for caregivers and physicians. Assists clinical chiefs, medical directors and others to design risk management programs specific to their individual areas.

13. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required.

• Graduate degree in Law or healthcare related field required.

EXPERIENCE/TRAINING:

• Minimum of seven years of experience in Clinical Risk Management required.

• Minimum of five years management experience required.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) certification required within one year of employment.

OTHER SKILLS:

• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to develop important relationships with key stakeholders.

• Strong communicator in written and verbal communications, understanding the needs of different audiences and stakeholders.

• Ability to work independently with minimum direction

• Strong interpersonal and management skills

• Ability to objectively collect and analyze data

• Knowledge of State, Federal and accreditation laws and standards.

• Proficient computer skills, including MS Office applications.
