1. Clinical Duties

To be professional, legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of work including the management of patients in care.

To ensure a high standard of clinical care to inpatient and hydrotherapy patients under physiotherapy management.

To undertake comprehensive assessments of patients and to formulate effective, clinically reasoned treatment plans.

To carry out timely assessment and treatment of a mixed caseload of inpatients and to facilitate safe discharge home from the hospital.

To be competent in using a wide variety of assessment techniques and skills.

To assess patients’ needs for any rehabilitative equipment and aids to improve safety and functioning within the home.

To demonstrate highly developed therapeutic handling skills requiring dexterity, co-ordination and palpation skills for accurate assessment, treatment and handling of patients.

To be accountable to the Physiotherapy HoD and communicate regularly through informal teaching and supervision sessions.

To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients and to organize this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and service requirement, with the guidance of HoD.

To maintain and demonstrate your own clinical professional development by keeping up to date with new treatment trends and research, incorporating them into your work as necessary.

2. Departmental / Organizational Duties

To ensure high standards of cleanliness and presentation are maintained at all times.

To be responsible for the safe use of equipment used within the physiotherapy department, notifying the Physiotherapy HoD of any equipment in need of repair or maintenance, and employing effective use of reporting systems already in place.

To comply fully with all departmental and organizational policies and procedures.

To be flexible and open to taking on duties with regard to both hospital and departmental administration.

To be flexible and open to undertaking any other duties that might be considered appropriate by the Physiotherapy HoD, especially during busy periods.

To actively participate in Corporate Induction and to be responsible for ensuring participation in ongoing mandatory training.

3. Supportive Duties

To work with the physiotherapy team to provide an efficient and effective service and to be involved in the proposal/development and implementation of departmental policies.

To be responsible, in a flexible and adaptable way for the operational management of the clinical team.

To be responsible for a specific management task or an identified project agreed with the department HoD.

To attend departmental staff meetings regularly and any other meeting agreed with department HoD.

To comply with departmental operational policies and ensure proper patient treatment.

To comply with Hospital charging policies and billing.

4. Communication

To demonstrate the ability to communicate complex and sensitive information to patients, and other staff including imparting unwelcome news.

To demonstrate the mental ability to remain concentrated and focused throughout a working day and respond to a variety of patient emotional needs.

To be able to manage potentially stressful, upsetting or emotional situations in an empathetic manner. To represent the Physiotherapy service and/or individual patients at the multi-disciplinary team meeting and senior staff nursing meetings.

To liaise with relevant colleagues, medical staff, nursing staff and other health care professionals who may be in direct contact with the post holder with regard to patient care.

To ensure timely and effective communication with the Physiotherapy HoD and senior/junior staff on all professional matters.

To communicate effectively with patients and carers, in order to maximise rehabilitation potential and provide safe and efficient discharge plans.

To use the hospital reporting systems for requesting and managing annual leave, sickness, study leave day and any other absence.

5. Health and Safety

To comply with the Health and Safety Policies of the hospital at all times to ensure the wellbeing of the post-holder, patients, visitors and other staff.

To be aware of Health and Safety issues within the hospital and department, ensuring prompt reporting and recording of any accidents or near misses.

6. Development

To be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through continuing professional development activities and record this in a portfolio.

To ensure that, as an individual practitioner, the post holder makes all reasonable efforts to develop and maintain the current background knowledge in the specialty area.

7. Training & Education

To actively participate in professional and multidisciplinary training and education.

Maintain a professional portfolio for continuing professional development, recording learning outcomes through participation in internal and external development opportunities.

8. General

To comply with policies for personal and patient safety and infection control; this includes a requirement for rigorous and consistent compliance with hand hygiene and use of personal protective equipment.

This job description outlines the current main responsibilities of the post. However the duties of the post may change and develop over time and this job description may be amended in consultation with the post holder.

Desired Profile:-

Bachelor in Physiotherapy or equivalent from a recognized university. (Preferably MPT – Master’s in Physiotherapy)

Knowledge / Experience

Minimum of 1 year of related physiotherapy experience.

Comprehensive knowledge of physiotherapy interventions, practice methods and professional skills.

Knowledge of other community resources.

Good understanding of the roles of other health care professionals and complementary therapies.

Up-to-date knowledge of physiotherapy theories, practices and procedures.

Knowledge of funding agencies available to assist clients in accessing needed support services and community resources.

Working knowledge of computer software (email, internet) and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook) .


Strong interpersonal skills to work with diverse client groups with varying levels of comprehension and language capability.

Effective listening, observation and facilitation skills to effectively assess clients and provide appropriate treatment and consultation.

Strong mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution skills to respond or assist in emergency situations.

Strong collaboration skills to manage service delivery in conjunction with health care professionals, clients, their family members/caregivers/substitute decision makers.

Ability to deal with demanding interpersonal situations and respond with good judgment and understanding.

Ability to communicate information effectively through a variety of means including meetings, reports, letters and presentations.

Advanced oral and written communication skills in English to establish and maintain a wide range of contacts with health care professionals and community organizations (oral proficiency in Kannada may be required in designated job postings).

Demonstrated ability to analyze and make independent decisions.

Ability to think critically, and be innovative to create/modify strategy or intervention techniques to suit the individual needs of clients.
