KEY REQUIREMENTS for R&D Mgr / CHEMICAL, REFINERY: Must have led and managed a research team and, Must have developed products from design through to commercialization that have specifically derived from petroleum crude oil as a base derivative (Lubricants, engine oils, waxes, base oils, industrial fluids, etc.)

R&D Mgr / CHEMICAL, REFINERY

We are seeking an experienced “hands on” Research Director to lead a skilled team of scientists and innovators in areas of disruptive new product development, cost-effective scale up, and full commercialization of new specialty petroleum products. Lead an accomplished team of scientific, engineering, and operations professionals at this modern specialty oil refinery in Pennsylvania as they develop new technologies in base oils, lubricants, and specialty hydrocarbon additives for the consumer products marketplace. This is a HIGH VISIBILITY role where you can truly help shape the future direction and profitability of the company. This role is a key member of the Executive Leadership Team and offers significant opportunities for career advancement.

Essential Job Functions include:

Oversee the research, planning, and execution of laboratory, pilot plant, and commercial scale experiments in the development of new products and technologies

Lead and mentor the research team comprised of PhD and M.S. Chemical Engineers, Chemists, and Laboratory Technicians in the development of new lube oils, specialty waxes, and various other petroleum distillate products

Interface with plant Process Engineers to apply sound chemical engineering principles in the identification and development of process technology and improvement projects

Develop best practices and processes while driving continuous improvement throughout the innovation and R&D department

Analyze experimental data and testing methods using statistical techniques

Review technical reports and present findings to executive management

Interface with internal and external customers and academia in the definition and development of new product applications

Collaborate with R&D, Operations, and Sales & Marketing teams to ensure that new products meet customers’ quality, performance, and economic needs

Periodic (10%) travel required to visit customer sites or participate in industry conferences

Qualifications for this role include:

Advanced Degree (MS and/or PhD) in Chemical Engineering or Petroleum Engineering

10-15 years of R&D experience within the Oil & Gas, Hydrocarbon Processing, Refining, or Petrochemical industries

Proven success in leadership roles encompassing innovation, strategy, training, planning, and product commercialization

Understanding of the patent process and holds at least one patent or published article in a technical journal

Expertise in Hydroprocessing is a plus, but not required

Effective project management skills with the ability to turn concepts into tangible products and technology

Skilled in presenting charts, graphs, and technical reports for executive management

Strong knowledge of safety and quality management procedures such as ISO:9001 and HAZOP

Must be proficient with all MS Office software – Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint

Outstanding oral and written communication skills

Clear track record of high achievement
