Marine Meteorological and Ocean Surface Data Specialist

Ocean Associates, Inc. (OAI) is seeking a candidate who will provide professional meteorological and ocean surface data support to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to improve NOAA’s ability to host and provide access to the most significant archives on Earth, with comprehensive oceanic, atmospheric, and geophysical data, products, and services.

Expected position start date: June 2018

Location: Asheville, NC

Salary and Benefits

This is a full-time position with excellent employee benefits, including medical insurance, holiday, vacation, and sick leave. Salary commensurate with experience.

Required Knowledge and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university with an oceanography, meteorology, natural resources management, environmental science major, or related field plus 8 years of related experience in ingest, quality control and management of marine observational datasets from worldwide ocean surface observations;

Knowledge of coordinating activities for acquisition, processing, quality assurance and control, archiving, product generation and dissemination of surface marine data and products including surface marine data standards and the systems designed to document.

Demonstrated experience with Java, JavaScript, Spring Framework, Node, NPM, continuous integration and deployment packages like Jenkins and Ancible, Drupal and Content Management Systems, micro-services and web service architecture, metadata, digital object identifiers (DOIs) relevant ISO metadata standards, metadata format standards and associated best practices.

Demonstrated experience building style-sheet, content development, and user workflow and implementing best practices in data management while supporting a variety of data product types on multiple data management and processing IT infrastructure.

Ability to pass a Federal Government background check.

Preferred Knowledge and Experience

Prior experience with National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) Scientific Data Stewardship (SDS) or other experience working with NOAA in a similar capacity is a plus.

The position requires access to Federal office buildings or ships and communication networks. Applicants must have US citizenship or right to work documents that do not expire during the contract period, combined with two years of US residency before the start of employment.
