Job Title: Survey Field Technician / Surveyor Helper Job Description This role offers an opportunity to start or grow a career in land surveying by working in the field under the direction of an experienced Crew Chief.
The Survey Field Technician collects precise field data using modern surveying equipment and software to support a wide range of projects, including transportation surveys, site development, boundary surveys, GPS work, and construction staking.
While the position is primarily field-based in central Ohio, occasional office tasks such as data processing and preparation of drawings and maps may be required.
Responsibilities * Collect topographic field data for the preparation of accurate surveys using surveying equipment and software.
* Use maps, drawings, plans, and aerial photographs to understand and assess project needs and field conditions.
* Assist in recovering survey control points and monumentation, performing construction layout, obtaining invert elevations and subsurface utility information, and completing photo documentation.
* Apply knowledge and techniques of surveying and advanced mathematics to support precise measurements and layout.
* Maintain survey equipment in good working order and initiate repairs or servicing when necessary.
* Stay current on surveying practices, guidelines, and industry best practices to ensure high-quality work.
* Research project documentation, including deeds, plats, and other records, to support survey activities.
* Set up project binders, download and organize field data, and perform related office tasks as needed.
* Assist in preparing drawings and maps using Carlson Survey, AutoCAD, and/or MicroStation when required.
* Collaborate closely with the Crew Chief and survey team to support project schedules and deliverables.
* Follow company standards and procedures for data collection, documentation, and safety in the field.

* Ability to learn quickly and adapt to company standards, processes, and field practices.
* Basic understanding of construction environments and field safety practices.
* Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate measurements and documentation.
* Ability to read and interpret maps, drawings, and plans with guidance.
* Effective communication skills to work under the direction of a Crew Chief and collaborate with team members.
* Basic math skills, with the ability to apply advanced mathematics concepts as trained.
* Reliable transportation to report to local job sites and field locations as scheduled.
Additional Skills & Qualifications * Prior surveying experience is preferred but not required.
* Experience with Topcon data collectors, robotic total stations, and GPS equipment is a plus.
* Computer skills in Carlson Survey, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and MicroStation are a plus.
* Relevant education such as a degree or coursework in surveying, engineering, or a related field is welcome, even without prior work experience.
* Interest in land surveying, construction stakeout, ALTA surveys, topographic surveys, and land development projects.
* Motivation to grow within the survey group and take on increasing responsibility over time.
* Openness to one-on-one training and mentorship from a licensed surveyor.
Work Environment This position is almost entirely field-based, with work performed outdoors year-round across central Ohio, primarily within the I-270 area.
The survey group supports a variety of project types, including builder services for residential new builds, commercial site development, land development, utility and infrastructure work, and smaller boundary surveys and lot splits.
Field work involves using survey instruments such as total stations, GPS equipment, and data collectors, often traveling to sites in a company vehicle.
Occasional office time may be required for tasks such as downloading data, organizing project documentation, and assisting with drafting in Carlson Survey, AutoCAD Civil 3D, or MicroStation.
