Occasional visit to work site areas within the Greater Boston area.

Position Summary:

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is in the process of working on a design and strategy for deployment of a centralized and consolidated Wide Area Network among all of the Executive Branch locations. This effort is part of the Governors top priorities.

We need an experienced and knowledgeable network architect to analyze the existing network infrastructure and design and strategize a plan for moving forward to a more efficient, cost effective and secure WAN.

The Network Architect will generate site-specific design options for delivering bandwidth and network capacity in order to provide connectivity between locations, to datacenters, to hosted and cloud-based enterprise applications, and the Internet.

The person in this role must determine a best path forward, to meet industry standards in our Network and Telecommunications topology.


• Collaborate on strategy and architecture with MASSIT, vendors and senior IT staff, propose solutions, build consensus and execute those solutions

• Provide recommendations on standards and procedures for technical infrastructure

• Provide technical insight and guidance on system designs to infrastructure staff as required

• Utilize advanced infrastructure architectural skills with knowledge of (network) virtualization platforms

• Identify opportunities to improve opportunities to improve architecture by utilizing new technology that is in line with MASSIT Technical Architecture

• Coordinate system testing of solutions

• Implement an end-to-end monitoring solution for the new environment

• Ensure that Network Security is prominent throughout the new environment

• Coordinate Production implementation of solutions with production staff

• Ensure that operational plans are in place for maintaining the environment going forward

• Participate in team meetings; resolve action items

• Participate in a Performance Reviews of the deliverables and services provided


• Bachelor degree specializing in engineering

• Minimum of 5 years of enterprise or service provider network design experience

• CCNA certification or equivalent preferred.

• Experience with QoS architectures is also essential.

• Knowledge of routing and switching fundamentals and products is essential.

• Must have excellent verbal, written and organization skills

• Practical experience working with WAN circuit providers

• Knowledge of Layer 2 and Layer 3 MPLS

• Network design and cost estimation is essential

• Knowledge of network operations and security best practices preferred

• Microsoft Visio experience a must

• Microsoft Project experience preferred
