The part-time Food Service Worker 4 serves in the kitchen and dining areas of the Indiana Veterans' Home to assist in the set up and serving of food and performs cleanup of the kitchen and dining areas. Candidate performs a variety of work assignments under moderate supervision of the supervisor as well as dietitians and cooks and receives detailed instructions for new tasks and follows specific procedures for recurring tasks. Candidate is often standing, walking, stooping and pushing food and dish carts. Occasionally, candidate must lift boxes of food or exert effort in scrubbing floors, furniture and kitchen equipment. Candidate works primarily in a kitchen which is both noisy and hot. Candidate is exposed to the hazard of falling on slippery floors or being burned or cut while using kitchen utensils and appliances.


• Sets up serving lines and prepares simple foods;

• Serves food to residents and employees from a counter or serving line;

• Loads food carts and delivers food to units of resident and employee dining area;

• Cleans dining area and sets up for next meal including washing tables and other containers, replacing empty milk dispensers and periodically washing walls;

• Washes dishes, pots, pans and/or silverware in dishwashers and loads on carts for next meal use;

• Cleans kitchen area, sweeping and mopping floors, emptying trash and gathering soiled linen;

• Cleans kitchen equipment such as dishwashers, toasters, refrigerators, meat grinders and slicers;

• Periodically de-limes dishwashers and defrosts refrigerators;

• Assists in storing foods and stocking serving areas;

• Assists in the training of new employees;

• Performs related work as required.

Preferred Experience:

Two (2) years employment or a high school diploma or GED.

Additional preferences:

• Working knowledge of, and ability to operate and clean, a variety of kitchen equipment including dishwashers, meat grinders, steamers and vegetable cutters;

• Ability to weigh foods for portion control;

• Ability to produce simple foods such as toast, cold cereals, frozen pies, bread and rolls, salads and uncooked desserts and to assist in the preparation of a variety of other foods;

• Ability to train new employees;

• Ability to function as an effective member of a team of institution workers.
