The hospitalist will need to know how to manage ICU patients except for ventilators, but does not have to do any procedures. Ventilators are managed by Pulmonologists. Specialists and Interventional Radiologists do procedures. The ER docs will place central lines for the hospitalist before admitting patient to the hospitalist for care.

Discharge planning must start at the time of admission with close contact with case management and family to prevent delays in discharge and misunderstandings in expectations. The goal with the patients is high quality of care with shortest hospital stay as possible, to reduce costs.

Regarding night calls – usually the calls are for new admissions and acute changes in patients. The nurses are wonderful and rarely call you for something they can wait to notify you the next day at 6 or 7 AM.Sometimes the hospitalists may have as many as 6 or 7 admits in a day and sometimes 0 admits in a day. It varies.
