Our Long Term Care Division is currently accepting applications from Nursing Students to work as Student PSWs for Summer 2026. Positions are available at the following locations:
Fairview Lodge in Whitby
Hillsdale Estates in Oshawa
Hillsdale Terraces in Oshawa
Lakeview Manor in Beaverton
Personal Support Worker
As a Student PSW, you will:
- Assist each resident with activities of daily living (ADLs), while promoting their independence
- Provide personal care and support to each resident according to their care plan
- Work cooperatively with the other members of the care team
- Participate in care planning, evaluation and documentation
The successful applicant will possess:
- Proof of enrolment in a Practical Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program, and returning to their studies in the Fall (must not be graduating)
- Previous clinical experience in a geriatric or long term care environment is preferred
- Demonstrated compliance with and knowledge of safe work practices
- Proven communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to follow both oral and written instructions
- A demonstrated willingness to adapt services to meet diverse needs
- Demonstrated empathy, concern and interest in providing quality care and services for residents
- Physical ability to perform the essential duties of the job
Hours of Work:
You may be scheduled to work all shifts - Days, Afternoons and Nights - including 2-3 weekends per month. Schedules are prepared based on operational needs of the home and are posted 4-6 weeks in advance. We do not schedule around another employer's work schedule or based on your availability. You must also maintain reasonable availability to pick up extra shifts, over and above the posted schedule, to allow the home to meet operational needs and provide short-notice coverage.
Hourly Wage:
The current hourly wage for the role is $23.92.
An additional $3.00 per hour top-up will be paid as per Ontario's Permanent Wage Enhancement program. Please note, this program is funded by the provincial government and may be subject to change.
Conditions of Employment
All applicants are expected to comply with the Region of Durham's Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct Policies throughout the recruitment process. The successful candidate will be required to provide a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check dated within two (2) months from date of hire. Additionally, tuberculosis screening will be required in accordance with the FLTC Act (O.Reg. 246/22). Proof of education, qualifications and any other job bona fide requirements will also be collected. Finally, compliance with the Mask Fit Testing Program is required and will be coordinated as part of the orientation process.
