Work Experience

1999-2008

Cytogenetic Medical Technician

New England Medical Center, Children's Floating Hospital, Boston

In this position in a relatively small laboratory it was important to use all my experience and knowledge gained in my professional career to work to a high standard, conscientiously and independently, whist effectively communicating with other staff members. The work covered the entire spectrum demanded in the field of Cytogenetics: namely, routinely processing, setting-up, harvesting, slide preparation and analysis of Blood, Tissue, Bone marrow and Amniocentesis samples. I also scored FISH looking for micro-deletions, malignant changes, and telomeric deletions and rearrangements. This was a demanding, challenging but rewarding laboratory where I was able to contribute to a successful team. I left this position when my Husband and I relocated with our family to Phoenix.

1997-1999 Trainee Clinical Scientist Grade A North (East) Thames Regional Cytogenetic laboratory Great Ormond Street hospital for sick Children, London

This position was one of fourteen places of a nationally accredited scheme for clinical scientists within the National Health Service in the UK. This position was a continuation of my training undertaken as a technical officer at Salisbury Diagnostic Laboratory. I passed stage one of the scheme which encompassed the fundamentals of Cytogenetics, including culture techniques, practice and theory, health and safety, chromosome analysis and specialist banding techniques, the theoretical aspects and scoring of FISH. Study of Cytogenetic syndromes including micro-deletion syndromes, correct ISCN nomenclature, evaluation of risk and interpretation of results and communication of results to clinicians in the form of report writing.

1996-1997 Medical Technical Officer (MTO 2) Wessex Regional Laboratory

Main responsibilities included routine culturing, processing and microscopic analysis of chromosomes in prenatal and postnatal sections, using standard techniques to aid cytogenetic diagnosis of chromosome abnormalities. Here I gained experience in the in-situ cover-slip culture of amniocytes and the practice and theory of cell synchronization techniques employed for high-resolution chromosome analysis.

Current Interests

I am the currently head of a co-op preschool program call Moms Day Out. This is a simple program in which Mothers share the child care of each others children. My job encompasses recruitment and maintenance of the group. Liaison with the Church who donates the classroom space, ensuring the work schedule is current and purchasing supplies and moderating the group Web site. Whilst this is a voluntary position I have enjoyed the interaction with other Mothers, and their appreciation in the one day a week of freedom the program provides them.

I enjoy most sports and would call myself a gym enthusiast and runner. I am an avid reader and belong to a local book club. I enjoy occasional craft projects, but spend most of my free time with my family.

I am looking to return to employment in the field of Cytogenetics after spending a period as a stay at home Mum, raising our three boys.
