Objectives
Ambitious biology major with a strong molecular and biochemical laboratory background is interested in a research position, at an important research organization that can provide an excellent environment for continued learning.
Education
BS: Biology (Pre-professional); Minor: Chemistry (expected May 2011); Dean’s List
Appalachian State University, Boone, NC
Related Coursework
Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology, Endocrinology, Physiology, Genetics, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry and Advanced Biochemistry
Relevant Experience
Researcher (Fall 2010 - present)
Project Title: Cell-free ethanol production with extract from Zymomonas mobilis microbes
Description: Responsible for bacterial cell culture of Zymomonas mobilis, for use in ethanol fermentation experiments in cell-free conditions. Used protein purification techniques and HPLC to optimize a cell-free ethanol process to enhance biofuels production by removing the living organism from the list of the rate-limiting factors. Under the guidance of Dr. Eric J. Allain, PhD.
Researcher (May-August 2010)
Project Title: Molecular characterization of rat cervix for Raman finger-printing
Description: Used real-time PCR and other molecular tools to characterize rat cervices in a collaborative effort between the Appalachian State University biology, physics and computer science departments to develop a non-invasive, trans-vaginal probe that could provide early detection of pre-term labor. Under the guidance of Dr. Nathan Mowa, PhD.
Textbook Collaborator (Fall 2010 – present)
Description: Assisting Dr. Nathan Mowa, PhD., with the writing of an Endocrinology text. Work includes compiling data and research, editing, and diagramming.
