PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Atlanta Regional Office, Senior Industrial Hygienist (2009-2012),

Serve as a regional technical authority in industrial hygiene, providing expertise and advice to Regional Area Directors and industrial hygienists as well as to employers, other federal agencies, state, local government, and union officials. Review significant case files (totaling over $100,000 in citations) for legal sufficiency of citations. Review Congressional complaints, complaint appeals, and fatality reports for formatting and to ensure that they are technically correct and that all complaint items have been properly addressed. Provide technical assistance to area offices in evaluating complex work processes and exposures not covered by health standards. Assist in conducting evaluations of Voluntary Protection Program sites. Evaluated worker exposures during the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill clean up.

Conducted workplace health hazard evaluations in response to requests from employees, employers, union representatives, and referrals from other government agencies. Developed a site visit and sampling plan to evaluate health hazards and recommend practical scientifically valid solutions for reducing occupational exposures and preventing disease, injury, and disability. Wrote health hazard evaluation reports, which were posted on the NIOSH web site and served as references for other safety and health professionals. Gave presentations on safety and health topics at national and state conferences such as the American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exposition, and the Ohio Safety Congress. CAM Environmental Services, Corporate Industrial Hygienist (2002-2003)

Developed industrial hygiene programs and policies for the company’s ten environmental health and safety consulting offices in the states of Texas and Louisiana. Met with corporate clients and other safety and health professionals to form a strategy for evaluating safety and health hazards at their worksites. Safety Kleen, Corporate Industrial Hygienist (2001-2002)

Provided industrial hygiene guidance and support to Health and Safety Managers at over 200 sites in the USA and Canada. Wrote and updated corporate industrial hygiene policies and procedures. Conducted site visits to evaluate worker’s exposures to chemical waste products and other physical, chemical and biological hazards at the worksites.

Comprehensive Health Services, Johnson Space Center, Industrial Hygiene Supervisor (2000-2001)

Supervised five specialists who provided industrial hygiene and safety support to NASA and contractors at the Johnson Space Center, in Houston, Texas, and the White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico. The specialists conducted routine walk-throughs of the facilities to identify and evaluate safety and health hazards and provided reports with findings and recommendations to control the hazards. They also provided emergency response support for asbestos disturbances, and chemical spills.

Comprehensive Health Services, Kennedy Space Center, Industrial Hygiene Program Manager (1998-2000)

Managed the Kennedy Space Center (KSC), and Cape Canaveral Air Station (CCAS); Respiratory Protection, Ventilation, Breathing Air, Hazard Communications, and Hypergolic Propellants Dosimetry Programs. Prepared compliance documents and served as a technical advisor on industrial hygiene issues for NASA, the USAF, and contract personnel at KSC and Cape Canaveral AS. Helped write the KSC Respiratory Protection Handbook and guidelines for KSC contract specifications for lead abatements. Helped Space Gateway Support write their VPP application and they were subsequently granted VPP status.

EG&G Florida, Kennedy Space Center, Environmental Health Specialist (1993-1998)

Provided industrial hygiene support to NASA and contractors at KSC and CCAS, which included launch and recovery support of the Space Shuttles, Titan, Atlas, and Delta rockets, the transfer of hypergolic propellants at launch facilities and satellite processing facilities, monitoring asbestos abatements, and evaluating abrasive blasting, painting, isocyanate foaming operations, and other chemical exposures. Along with other specialists conducted annual facility walk-throughs to identify safety and health hazards at more than 1000 facilities located at KSC/CCAS. Received extensive safety and health training and wore all levels of respiratory protection to include NASA’s Propellant Handler’s Ensemble (SCAPE) suit with a liquid air pack, SCBAs, PAPR, and APRs.

Self-Employed (1985-1993)

Owned and managed several rental properties, a dance club for teen-agers, a karate school, and a beauty shop.

United States Air Force, Aircraft Maintenance Officer (1978-1985)

After attending Aircraft Maintenance Officers School I was stationed at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa where I was responsible for supervising 300 maintenance specialists during the restoration of 30 F-4D aircraft, which were to be transferred to the Air National Guard. All aircraft were transferred on schedule and I was awarded a commendation medal. While at Seymour Johnson AFB, I served as the Maintenance Supervisor for the Organizational Maintenance Squadron and was responsible for the maintenance of 15 B52-Gs and 14 KC-135 aircraft. I ensured that proper information and instructions flowed from staff functions to Branch and Team Chiefs. Made sure aircraft were ready for flight as scheduled. I also performed additional duties as the Life Support Officer, Squadron Mobility Officer, Nuclear Safety Officer, Explosives Safety Officer, Ground Safety Officer, and Flying Safety Officer.

United States Air Force, Environmental Health Specialist (1970-1978)

After attending Preventive Medicine School I was assigned to San Vito Air Station, Italy, Ellington Field, in Pasadena Texas, Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Base in Thailand, and Pope Air Force Base in North Carolina, where I performed numerous duties pertaining to industrial hygiene and military public health. Some of those duties were; industrial hygiene surveys, managing the occupational physicals, radiation dosimetry, food handlers’ physicals, mosquito control, and drinking water quality. I also monitored the disposal of hazardous waste, storm water runoff, and other sources of pollution at the military bases.

In addition to formal education in industrial hygiene and safety I have received training in many areas of safety and health, which includes NIOSH 582, asbestos abatement, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, ventilation, chemical sampling, HAZWOPER, indoor air quality, and several safety and health courses at the OSHA Training Institute on inspection techniques, health and safety standards, accident investigation, and legal aspects.
