Research project: Optimization of lipid composition in algal biodiesel
production. (Supervisor – Dr. S. J. Wilkinson)
Biodiesel obtained from algae is environment friendly as it generates zero net carbon emission. The algae use the photosynthesis process to fix the carbon dioxide to produce lipids. These lipids are then separated from the algal biomass, transesterified and finally washed. This project focuses on optimization of lipid production in algae grown in photobioreactor. A possible method of doing this is by stressing the cells eg: limiting the nutrients essential like nitrogen or phosphorus required for the growth. Also investigating the effect of different stresses on lipid content of the cell
Techniques worked on: Nile red test, gravimetric method, chlorophyll content, nitrogen content test. Also worked using Poultry manure.
Algae samples worked on: Dunaliella salina, Nannochloropsis, Tetraselmis etc.
Subjects studied: Principles of Biochemical engineering, Microfluids, Biopharmaceutical bioprocessing, Bioenergy, Biosystems Engineering & Computational biology, Research methods in Biological and Bioprocess engineering, Bionanotechnology
