PROFESSIONAL SKILLS

Provide thorough and careful assistance with daily living needs including bathing, grooming, and dressing. Purchase, prepare, and serve food for patients and other family members, following special prescribed diets. Perform light housekeeping including laundry, dishwashing, and general household chores.

Assist patients into and out of bed, automobile, or wheelchair, to lavatory, and up and down stairs. Accompany ambulatory patients outside home, to medical appointments and social engagement, serving as guide, companion, and aide.

Administer prescribed oral medications under written direction of physician or as directed by home care nurse. Maintain records of patient care, condition, progress, and problems in order to report and discuss observations with a supervisor or case manager.

Provide social support and companionship to clients, many whom are completely house-bound and often do not receive many visitors. Entertain patients; read aloud; and play board, card, and other stimulatory games.

Massage patients and apply preparations and treatments, such as liniment or alcohol rubs and heat-lamp stimulation. Minimize the risk of skin breakdown by being attentive to patient’s hygiene, proper positioning, and injury prevention.

Perform miscellaneous duties, such as obtaining household supplies and running errands.

Care for children who are disabled or who have sick or disabled parents.

Provide patients and families with emotional support and instruction in areas such as infant care, preparing healthy meals, independent living, and adaptation to disability or illness.

Direct patients in simple prescribed exercises and in the use of braces or artificial limbs.

Check and chart patients' pulse, temperature, blood pressure, blood glucose, and respiration.
