 Developed a reactive extrusion process for producing polypropylene resins containing amine chemical groups through melt phase amination of commodity maleated polypropylene resins; a reliable and accurate amine metering scheme was developed.

 Prepared TPU/Polypropylene composites using aminated PPs as a compatibilizer to increase polymer-polymer phase miscibility; determined mechanical properties of blends.

• Industry project: formulation and processing of biodegradable plastic composites with additives including polyactic acid (PLA)

 Designed experiments using engineering statistics principles; perform extrusion compounding and characterizations.

• Analyzed surface characteristics of anhydride functionalized polyethylenes by axisymmetric drop shape analysis - profile (ADSA-P).

 Determined the effect of electrode adhesives on electrochemical performance of MH/Ni battery.

 Functionalized SBS and SEBS elastomers with polar monomers (BA, MMA, VAc).

 Compared the physical and electrochemical performance of SBS adhesive with PTFE and HPMC, as well as the electrochemical performance of MH electrode with SBS as adhesive in different solvents.

 Performed physiochemical measurement of adhesives (SBS, modified SBS, PTFE, HPMC), including viscosity, tensile, shearing and impact strength, alkali resistance, FTIR, and SEM.

Project Engineer at Dept. of Materials Sci. & Eng., Tianjin University 09/96-09/97

• Participated in a NNSFC (the National Natural Science Foundation of China) project: antibacterial chitosan/viscose rayon blends.

 Developed a binary blend of chitosan/viscose rayon (Cs/VR) and a ternary blend of Cs/VR with carboxymethylated chitosan (CM-Cs) as compatibilizer, by blending pre-prepared chitosan emulsion with ripening viscose.

 Implemented characterization via various techniques, including FTIR, wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), DSC, DMA, and TEM.

 Results of the TEM show that the addition of CM-Cs into the blend can improve the compatibility of Cs with VR.

Engineering Internship (Project Technologist) in TJU Tianhai Technology Development Co., Ltd. 01/96-09/96

 Initiated the random copolymerization of carbon dioxide (CO2) and epichlorohydrin (ECH) using rare-earth coordination catalysts.
