Partial Summary of Duties Performed:

In all of these design and management positions I have under taken there were as few as 15 and as many as 150 engineer, from all lines of discipline, electrical, mechanical, software and scientists. I have 46 US and international patents. The amounts of money involved ranged from a couple of million to several hundred million. I understand lean six sigma manufacturing and engineering functions. I believe my greatest attribute is the ability to motivate other engineers and create the enthusiasm needed to complete projects and tasks in a timely, functional and profitable manner People, product, and profits.

Manager of Mechanical Engineering, Pitney Bowes. Developed a new high speed ink-jet base. This technology allows credit card companies, direct mailers, USPS to print addresses and graphics at rates to 50K per hour. This project was from alpha to omega. Feasibility and risk assessment study conducted to warrant the capital expenditure, concept design, prototype, first article and then production. We used Lake Camera systems for OCR and visual recognition at speeds to 50K per hour. Vacuum systems for rejects and drying systems as required depending on the ink configuration. I also had project management and budget responsibility. This project was completed in 6 months and is currently generating 3-5 million per year. The concept and detail design were mine, we used a hands on approach and brought this product to production in record time. I have (3) current patent pending applications at the PTO. We used 3 mechanical designers, 2 electrical engineers and 4 software engineers. The facility employed 260.

Senior Electro-Mechanical Engineer, Kalm Systems Inc. Performed a series of duties to perform engineering requirements specified by current clients, I have a patent pending on a down whole oil tool for detecting drill pipe collars using RFID technology. I headed a short term project for SDI whose client was EA Sports distribution facility. This project was dead until a new concept was developed by me. High speed product identification using RFID and high speed cameras. Servo driven diverting and transporting of the product up to 500 feet per minute. The product was singulated, identified and stacked automatically. The product varied in size from 4”X4” up to 10”x10” so a very complex challenge to stack odd size product at 18-20K per hour. Not only did I over see product development but also had project management and budget responsibility. 2 mechanical engineer, 3 electrical engineers, 6 software engineers.

Founder and partner of Kalm-Forsythe Global Innovation (KFGI)_ now Global Solutions Inc. Invented a new synthetic polymer that at a molecular level you can take to dissimilar material and join them together without a parting line. Made a large variety of parts including a tilt tray sorter, RFID transparent to RF radiation, form this material (Brandonite 6689).

Chief Engineer (Daifuku) Scope: Develop a 24 volt conveyor system to compete in the USPS market. Scope: Design modular components along with a Plug-N-Play modularity control system. System was awarded a patent in 1999. Managed 50 Mechanical and Electrical Engineers. Scope: Develop an ASRS system to compete with current US market place, utilizing overseas manufacturing. Daifuku is the second largest material handling company in the world.

Senior Engineer Consultant (Computed aided Systems Inc.)Scope: Developed and manufactured Tray Handling Storage System for USPS tray handling systems awarded a patent in 2003. Robotic extractor and turntable indexing to achieve 33 trays per minute throughput. Storage capacity from 1800 to 6000 mail trays.

Siemens/Rapistan Dematic Scope: Design automatic retrieval system for new FSM1000 flat sorting machine for the USPS. Extract a full mail container and replace it with an empty. This system utilized servo devices for the extraction and resetting of the mail container. Capacity 45000 flats per hour. Mechanism was awarded a patent in 2002.Scope: Designed a low voltage (24) conveyor system for USPS to be manufactured by Rapistan, this system was awarded a patent in 2000.

Senior Mechanical Engineer (Electrocom Automation) Scope: Design low voltage conveyor systems for the USPS Tray Handling System. This system was awarded a patent in 1997. Managed 45 Mechanical Engineers. Currently the USPS specifications require all tray handling Systems to utilize 24 volt technology. Scope: Convert a screw drive mechanism on a tilt tray sorter to a linear induction motor (SLIM) drive system. Currently all the tilt tray sorter manufacturers worldwide use (SLIM’s) for thrust propulsion. Scope: Pick and place robotic systems for USPS security credit card handling system. These systems utilized ABB devices and controls. Scope: Design and cost for FED-X Memphis Flats Handling Systems. Design the first dual-tray tilt tray sorter. We utilized servo packs for controlling the tipping mechanism for dropping flat at their proper locations. Powered by (LIM technology) Scope: Redesign the Delivery Bar Code Sorter (DBCS) to encompass auto-mail extraction utilizing linear Synchronous motors (LSM). Scope: Design for FHA complete automated pharmaceutical dispensing system, this included the first 24 volt intelligent conveyor system for tracking all tote with medications to the proper stations for evaluations. The first conveyor of its type to interface PLC logic with PC logic for tote tracking. This system was awarded a patent in 1996 Scope: Worldwide Tour to explore all new and emerging markets and technologies in automated material handling systems.

Senior Mechanical Engineers (BAE) for the Denver International Airport Baggage Handling System. Scope: 9000 Linear induction motors (DLIM), 4000 Designated Coded Vehicle (DCV) 21 miles of track, 500 switches, Auto-Induction and discharge of payload, 1800 controls panels, System was awarded 9 patents in 1995-1997 and cost of 200 million USD. Managed 65 Mechanical and Process Engineers. Senior Engineer on 15 US Airport baggage handling systems. Diverts, merges, high speed belt conveyors to 60 inches in width and speeds to 450 FPM. System layout and process design including PLC and PC interfaces. The switching and loading of baggage were all done using high end servo motors and controls. Rexroth at the time, were the manufacturers of the servo devices. We implemented a servo pusher mechanism for pushing bags from one conveyor to another at a rate of 60 bags per minute. These devises had to operate in a very harsh environment.
