I have been actively involved from RFP stage of GEHC Global DBA Operations Support Project from questionnaire response, Due Diligence, Knowledge Transfer & then project execution phase. MSAT has been awarded GEHC Global DBA Operations Support in March, 2011. Before this period the project was being managed for almost 10 years by another vendor. A major contributor ensuring projects success & delivering high on customer expectations & MSAT promises. Within span of six months, I have been appreciated several times from customer front for technical & deliverable capabilities on high demanding, critical new projects & operational support for running databases on day to day basis which involves 1000+ Oracle databases. My roles and responsibilities involve below given tasks …
• Creation of databases based on the capacity requirements and standards. • Installation and configuration of database/application binaries and High Availability software components (Cluster). • Define and create the physical database design (e.g. data files, log files, undo segments, tablespaces etc.) • Create definitions of logical data structures, tables, views, indexes, and program specification blocks (e.g., Database procedures, packages, functions etc.,) and define their relationships • Create the data definition statements needed to create logical structures • Estimating storage requirements (in consultation with application team) and provision the databases per needs • Create all documentation required for the various stages of the project (e.g. Database design, build documents etc.) • Follow all applicable quality procedures during the build and testing of database infrastructure environments and software installation specifications when creating /installing databases • Review the security requirements and configure the database for the security needs. • Maintenance of Databases e.g., recycling databases and application technology stack components, reorganizing data objects, patching, periodic password changes, reorganizing file system, database migration across servers etc., • Setup/configure database monitors. Monitor the health and performance of databases and take timely actions to resolve the incidents/alerts reported by the monitors. • Develop and implement custom administrative/reporting scripts • Disk space cleansing/archival by removing/moving unwanted/expired files that are no more required • Design, Implement and execute system, database and application backup and recovery as per schedules/requests. Setup/configure monitors for backup success/failure. Perform root cause analysis on backup/recovery incidents to increase reliability of the backups. • Perform restoration/recovery of database/applications (e.g., Time based, transactional recovery etc.) • Setting up and implementing database reorganizations as per schedules/requests in collaboration with application teams whenever required • Recommend/implement standards for databases • Constructively collaborate with Application/Infrastructure/functional/Problem Management teams e.g., to fix the availability/performance incidents, to identify the root cause for problems involving multiple layers (application, database – Oracle, MSSQL, Teradata, and MySQL), infrastructure etc.) • Perform investigation and diagnosis on performance incidents. Identify, recommend and implement fix for the performance incidents and problems through tuning measures (e.g., database parameters, memory structures, queries etc.). • Perform impact analysis for the database changes/patches/upgrades and also for the infrastructure/application changes that could impact the database layer • Publish the Forward Calendar of Changes and Maintenance windows to all the stakeholders
• Testing and implementation of patches (e.g., security, application patches etc.,) and upgrades of databases in consultation with application DBA • Perform data collection on the database capacity (CPU, Memory, Storage etc.,) and report out capacity forecast and requirements • Perform High Availability (e.g. Real Application Cluster) configuration, administration and management of databases in High available infrastructure • Perform Cloning of databases/applications as per requests/schedules. Assist in migrating/refreshing data/schemas in collaboration with other support teams • Adherence to the Qualification/Validation processes. Project Name: Allstate Roadside Service PMG Applications Support Client: Allstate Insurance Location: South Barrington, IL Role: Sr. Database Administrator Duration: Jan’ 2009 to Jan’ 2011 Environment: Oracle 8i, 9i, 10g, 11g, Informix, Sybase, BO, SAS, Toad, Sun Solaris Database: Oracle 8i, 9i, 10g, 11g/ Informix/Sybase Tools: BO, TOAD O/s: Sun Solaris Hardware: SUN 15K, SUN 25K Project Description The Project Allstate Roadside Service PMG Applications Support involves integration of data between the different business applications. The integration solution involving MMA/ CTI / Map Quest / Sigma Dynamics / Web Claims, Web services, Infrastructure Management services, Mainframe (CMS, LCAP, Finance & Systems Operations), Data Transmissions, Customer Contact Apps, Portal Applications, Financial Systems (Java, VB & MF), Informatics, Web & Oracle Administration, Quality Assurance, Business Intelligence and Mobile Applications , thus providing a reliable support. This allows the users in various locations of Allstate Roadside Service across US to access required information from various applications using different databases. Contribution • Acquired Data Centre migration experience from initiation stage to closure stage by active participation at each & every stage • Migrated 70+ Oracle databases to totally different hardware in GE & then upgraded all Oracle 9i databases to release 10.2.0.4 with out any issues • Successfully migrated & consolidated 40+ Non RAC development databases to 6 RAC (2 nodes) databases with ASM from GE owned servers to Allstate servers • Successfully migrated & consolidated 30+ Non RAC production databases to 6 RAC (2 nodes) databases with ASM from GE owned servers to Allstate servers • Ensured that the best possible approach was followed for each database migration to minimize downtime • Oracle 10g databases smaller in size were successfully migrated by using the best option of Oracle, data pump utility • Production database of 400+ GB in size was taking approx 8 hours for migration, used the best possible approach Oracle Streams & the whole migration effort on the cut off date just took only 15 minutes by streams set up • Implemented online migration strategy for 3 Oracle 8i instances & the approach took less than 30 minutes down time which was initially estimated around 12 hours for each database migration. • All migration scripts were tested several times with all possible best options to overcome any issues at last moment • Ensured that databases copy was available in to be new environment much ahead of scheduled migration date so that application teams were able to test their application functionality thoroughly, against the to be new environment • Ensured that databases backups, restore, alerting & performance issues were duly taken care before the migration • Active participation provided greater level of proficiency & immediate issues resolution for mission critical applications • All & above the best point to mark is not a single migration (60+ databases hosting 100+ applications) had any issues because of databases.
