Education

Oberlin College 1998-2004

Received B.A. in English

I majored in English, and studied poetry mainly. I also took an interest in philosophy, and theology. I took two years off from school and worked at a preschool. After this, I returned and finished my degree. Before the time off, I didn't feel that college was worth my time. After working for a while, I returned with more appreciation for my studies.

The Waring School 1994-1998

Received Diploma

Work History

Maria Miles Visitor Center

I currently work here, doing customer service. My job involves working a cash register, cleaning, closing the facilities, and giving directions to people. I also help people find things to do in the Boston area, and help them find hotels to stay in.

Burapha University International College 2011

While I was working at the YWCA, I also got a job at a small college in Bangsaen, Thailand. I was asked to teach Academic Writing, and Nonverbal Communication. This was for Thai students, as well as a few Chinese and Korean students. I gained more experience in leading classes, especially larger classes. I translated a book of poetry with my Writing class (from Thai into English) and did various real-life interactive exercises with the Nonverbal Communication class.

YWCA Language Center 2011 I was getting married around this time, and my wife and I decided to move and find new jobs. There were a few options, including Thailand, where my wife is from. We moved there in the Fall of 2011. I found work teaching ESL to businessmen and women in the Chonburi area. This was my first real experience as a classroom teacher. I learned about speaking clearly, and loudly enough, to be heard. I learned about how to structure lessons and give homework, and manage a classroom.

Legacy High School 2008-2010

This is a special education school. I worked here alongside classroom teachers, monitoring student work and behavior. I assisted students going from class to class, and received training in observing behavior and disabilities, and working with student behavior. I was also trained in the Barbara Wilson Language system, a technique for teaching students (often those with dyslexia) how to read and write better. I tutored a number of students using the Wilson system, and also in Math.

Au Bon Pain 2007-8

I moved to New York City after my time in California, and worked in a few restaurants and cafes. This was one of them.

YMCA of Marin County 2005-2006

This was an afterschool/before school program. My responsibilities were basically the same as at the preschools where I worked, but the students ranged from K-6. I took classes in CPR, and Child Safety.

Rite Aid 2005

Oberlin Early Childhood Center 2004

Here, I continued working with children, mainly assisting the art teacher in her lessons.

Lord-Saunders Dining Hall(Oberlin College) 2002-2004

Rockport Early Childhood Center 2000-2002

I worked here as a teacher's aide. I helped clean and organize the classroom, but also in planning lessons and activities. I took classes in Child Development and Art, eventually getting teacher's aide certification.

Other Activities

Practicum in Tutoring 2001-2004

Child Development and Arts courses 2001

Goals

I've worked in education, in a variety of ways, for the last eight years. I'm continuing to look for jobs in this field, including teaching and tutoring. As someone who writes and does art, I'm always looking for ways to bridge art and my professional life. I'm also branching out and looking for office work in various fields.
