Histotechnician

Accessioned surgical specimens and set up gross, assisted the pathologists with grossing, kept the storeroom in order by putting supplies away and dumping old specimens, took photographs when needed. I also served as morgue attendant. Duties included release of remains to funeral homes and assistance with autopsies. When a position opened for a histotechnician, I was promoted. My duties included: embedding, cutting and staining of surgical blocks, preparing special stains, and cutting frozen sections.

After my supervisor retired due to a disability, I ran the laboratory on my own for approximately 10 months. My duties were expanded to include all supervisory procedures. This experience allowed me the opportunity to become familiar with procedures for ordering supplies, preparing all required paperwork, and preparing the lab for inspection.
