I’m an experienced senior technology transfer associate seeking to grow and develop new business relations and partnerships on behalf of the University. I am working together with the research faculty and students to identify inventions and create new business opportunities in order to provide local jobs to Utah communities and the nation. My work responsibilities are generally common to all Technology Transfer Offices and additionally include; drafting patents, facilitating the patenting process, assessing patent estates and assisting in the development of patent strategies for marketing the technology. I am fortunate to represent my office in the most productive areas of inventorship at the University by serving on the USU Executive Administration Boards for: 1) Center for Advanced Nutrition, 2) Institute for Antiviral Research, 3) Diagnostics and Infectious Disease, 4) Biofuels Center, 5) Synthetic Bio-manufacturing Center, 6) Agricultural Experiment Station and 7) Engineering. I am directly involved in startup financing, corporate governance, patent drafting, patent prosecution (reviewing, monitoring, and approving the legal processes associated with patenting, trademarks, copyrighting), drafting and negotiating licenses, material transfer agreements, confidential disclosure agreements, public agency agreements related to USU owned technologies; investigating and monitoring each case for impending statutory bars and deadlines; and taking appropriate action to assure the opportunity to protect and license USU intellectual property worldwide. Initiating new business ventures (i.e. spinout funding, SBIR, STTR) and new market development projects for the University worldwide and representing USU in the negotiations of multi-million dollar licensing agreements to companies within the US and internationally. I am an active participant in industry partnering sessions within science member organizations, such as the Utah Innovations Awards committee and Utah Business Development. I’ve served as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors of two local companies. As an experienced manager, I am seeking continuous improvement to office operations and diligently seek out internal and external opportunities regarding improvements in efficiency and functions of my own work. Last Title: Assistant Director for Research Programs 7/01-12/2007

Duties: I directed a team of specialists in technology transfer, contracts, RFP’s and intellectual property protection and report to the Dean for Research and Director of the Florida Ag Experiment Station. Performance of total license income that I am personally responsible for has escalated 320% during my tenure. Managing operations and counsel staff on projects and issues. Act as liaison to UF faculty and private industry by facilitating the patenting process, assessing patent estates and assisting in the development of patent strategies. Initiating new business ventures and new market development projects for the University of Florida worldwide and representing the UF in the negotiations of multi-million dollar licensing agreements with US and international companies. My responsibilities include: setting department policy, business partnerships, finance, commercializing life science inventions, patent prosecution (reviewing, monitoring, and approving the legal processes associated with patenting, trademarks, copyrighting. The University’s IFAS unit (2,300 employees) conducts world class research and education. UF is the top-performing public institution at transferring its research to the marketplace. UF received $519M in research funding and earned ~$48M in licensing income in 2007.

Florida Foundation Seed Producers, Inc., Gainesville, FL

Last Title: Germplasm Manager 7/01-12/07

Duties: FFSP, Inc. is a non-profit, direct support organization of UF/IFAS, conducting technology transfer of plant germplasm. Reporting directly to the Dean of Research with a goal to commercialize UF inventions through contracts/licensing and Intellectual Property protection of new varieties and plant genetic materials. Provided a leadership role in setting operations policy, risk assessment, new business development, and IP protection for the organization. I was the principle negotiator of commercial license agreements to private industry. Our mission is to continually improve tech-transfer and maximize UF/IFAS research programs support. FFSP manages over 500+ licenses within 34 major research program portfolios in a multi-$million domestic and international enterprise. The success of the operation is measured by the royalties received through licensing. License income that I am personally responsible for has escalated 400% during my tenure. Royalties collected are provided back to UF/IFAS research programs.

Coors Brewing Company, Golden Colorado

Last Title: Department Head, Brewing Materials Quality, Research and Development. (prior to 2001)

Technical expert and leader in agronomy, plant breeding, seed physiology, pathology in support of 20 field agronomists in the western USA. Served several years as the Head of the Malting Barley Research Center and have invented at least 7 commercial malting barley varieties used by COORS and approximately 2000 contracted farmers in the Western US. Held various scientific, leadership/management positions in a top sales and marketing corporation. First hired as Sr. Plant Scientist to supervise all related science of the Malting and Brewing research operations and leading the research group to invent, evaluate and commercialize new malting barley varieties. Collaborated and funded UC-Berkeley scientists to develop the 1st successful transgenic barley and operated transgenic field evaluations under Federal transgenic regulations.
