Professional Experience
Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc., Morenci Hydrometallurgical Operations, Morenci, AZ Jun 2009 – May 2011
Metallurgist I, Supervisor: Rosa Schnebly
• Supervised solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) plant operations.
• Rectified SX plant design issue that was causing increased organic entrainment. Initiated a design change that resulted in a 60% decrease in organic entrainment.
o Results were published in Solvent Extraction and Ion Exchange.
• Designed new chevron to improve flow distribution in the SX settlers. Design adopted by company for all SX operations.
• Evaluated a BioTector TOC analyzer to perform in-line organic entrainment measurements.
o Identified flaw in design that the supplier is working to correct.
Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc., Technology Center, Safford, AZ Jun 2009 – May 2011
Research Engineer I, Supervisor: Jason Morgan
• Participated in the Graduate Development Program through the SX/EW Test Facility.
• Tested a new SX extractant in order to compare performance to extractants currently in use.
• Studied the effects of air sparging on EW cathode to determine if air sparging could improve cathode quality.
University of South Carolina, Department of Chemical Engineering, Columbia, SC Jan 2009 – May 2009
Lab Assistant, Supervisor: Dr. Francis Gadala-Maria
• Arranged the purchase of a 12-ton hydraulic press to be used in viscosity studies of semi-conductor materials.
• Explored an ion exchange membrane for the separation of cuprous from cupric copper.
Milliken Chemical Company, University of South Carolina special project, Spartanburg, SC Jan 2009 – May 2009
Group Member, Supervisor: Dr. Vincent Van Brunt
• Designed a grass-roots facility to produce a starting material for an existing process.
3V Inc., Environmental Services, Georgetown, SC Jun 2008 – Aug 2008
Engineering Intern
• Implemented an organic emissions measurement program to satisfy EPA requirements.
• Assisted in wastewater treatment plant operations.
University of South Carolina, Filtration Research Engineering Demonstration (FRED), Columbia, SC May 2001 – Nov 2002
Operator/Lab Assistant, Supervisors: Ralph Haggard and Carol Stork
• Operated a semi-scale nuclear cross-flow filtration system modeled after Westinghouse Savannah River Site.
• Analyzed sample and filtrate for percent composition and total suspended solids.
University of South Carolina, Chemical Engineering Department, Columbia, SC Jun 1999 – Aug 1999
Lab Assistant, Supervisor: Dr. Francis Gadala-Maria
• Tested the effects of hydrogen peroxide corrosion on a semi-conductor cell.
• Attempted the translation of an image processing program from FORTAN into C.
University of South Carolina, Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, Columbia, SC Jun 1998 – Aug 1998
Lab Assistant, Supervisor: Dr. Uwe Bunz
• Synthesized simple organo-metallic compounds.
• Examined complex organo-metallic synthesis to determine extent of reaction and verify product formation.
