Experience

Research Engineer 06/10 – present

Difrex, Inc./Florida Institute of Technology Melbourne, FL (Contract Position)

Direct laboratory activities in support of development and demonstration of new process to produce fuels from biomass. Also involved with the design of the pilot and commercial scale reactors.

Senior Process Technology Engineer 03/07 – 02/09

Albemarle Corporation Orangeburg, SC

Position Eliminated\Downsizing

Responsible for developing and implementing batch GMP processes such as pharmaceuticals, food additives, and other specialty chemicals in plant, evaluating alternative production methods and troubleshooting key process issues for ongoing processes including ibuprofen.

• Developed custom batch commercial process for Phytostanols. Finished product exceeded quality specifications and was delivered ahead of schedule with no safety or environmental incidents.

o Performed laboratory and pilot scale investigations to establish material and energy balance and critical process control parameters.

o Scaled up process to plant scale, developing process flows (PFD), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID), operating procedures, and batch records.

o Performed process design calculations to size and specify piping and equipment such as exchangers, flow orifices, chillers, pressure relief devices, etc.

o Determined required changes and additions to piping and process equipment in the plant. Initiated Management of Change (MOC) orders and worked with maintenance and operations groups to drive them to completion.

o Installed process in the plant, overseeing changeover, start up, and production. Trained operations personnel in performing operations procedures and awareness of safety hazards.

• Helped manage changeover of raw material suppliers for ibuprofen process (GMP).

o Performed raw material validation for ibuprofen process.

o Modeled and simulated drying & break-in of adsorption bed, wrote operating procedures for start up/commissioning, sampling, and replacing adsorbent. Oversaw start up of adsorber bed in plant.

• Identified and implemented process improvement that increased production by 33% per batch, reducing raw material and utility costs for the campaign.
