Polymer Chemist

• Developed polymer formulation recipes and optimized polymerization processes.

• Created a number of formulations using novel polymers.

• Devised solutions for numerous processing and formulation issues.

• Worked alongside synthetic chemists to create desirable polyelectrolyes to be used in the formulation.

• Collated results to determine trends and patterns that could be used to improve processing and performance of materials.

• Scaled up formulations for larger batches.

• Tested polymer membranes and poly-electrolytes for fuel cell applications.

• Analyzed and characterized polymers using GC, rheology, conductivity, HPLC, FTIR, DSC and potentiometric, caloric, UV-Vis Spectroscopy, acid-base titrations and gravimetry.

• Maintained lab notebooks and electronic records of experimental data.

• Presented findings at group and departmental meetings. Wrote monthly technical reports.

• Trained in safety and GLP regulations.

Plascoat Systems LTD; Farnham, UK Aug 2004 – Dec 2007

Development Technologist/Senior Colorist

• Formulated and developed various plastic compounds for a large range of applications and improved existing compounds to improve processing conditions and shortfalls.

• Experience with polymer characterization by both thermal analysis and viscosity

• Monitored and controlled factory facilities; approved products on QC merits, BSI, and ISO accreditation.

• Maintained batches of production material from both master batch and final compounding areas, while working with the Quality Control and the manufacturing areas to solve issues. Using standards for all stages of production and insuring that the ΔE was within 0.5u in all 3 major light sources.

• Performing QC testing on current production materials, physical and analytical testing would continue on products in this stage and those in development.

• These tests would consist of abrasion resistance; melt flow index, tensile strength, and penetration resistance using both a penetrometer and impact tester.

• Additionally more analytical methods would be used to determine the make up of additives in batches and in returned or failed materials.

• The analytical methods usually involved IR spec, both diffractive and traditional methods, as well as GCMS, HPLC, and wet chemistry techniques.

• Once the testing was complete the results would be subject to statistical analysis to determine trends and anomalies to help verify development and QC of products.

• Evaluated suppliers for raw feed and packing material. Fully trained Colorist with full experience on ISO's along with strict guidelines and deadlines.

• Gained expertise for a range of wet chemistry, analytical techniques and instrumentation.

• Utilized processes including GC, MS and HPLC.

• Technical sales representative for ambient ground and freeze ground polymers
