PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
SEPARATIONS CHEMISTRY LABORATORY, UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA
Researcher (2006 – 2010)
Developed silica, titania, and germania-based organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel materials for preconcentration and separations applications. Evaluated results using HPLC and GC. Operated, maintained, fixed, connected, and customized various types of HPLC systems. Operated several types of GC systems. Compiled and analyzed data. Prepared scientific manuscripts. Mentored, trained, and supervised 7 undergraduate student researchers, many of whom earned high accolades and awards. Procured, assembled, installed, maintained, and repaired laboratory equipment, ensuring safety and lab productivity.
• Developed 9 novel sol-gel materials for use in sample preconcentration and/or separation.
• Within only 2 months, developed new organic/inorganic hybrid sol-gel coating and tested it for ability to extract various analytes in conjunction with high-performance liquid chromatography. Tested new sol-gel coating and evaluated ability to preconcentrate wide range of compounds. Calculated limits of detection, and run-to-run and capillary-to-capillary relative standard deviations.
• Ranked as most productive researcher in history of Analytical/Separation Chemistry Laboratory. Developed 8 other sol-gel materials, resulting in 6 publications in peer-reviewed international science journals, including Analytical Chemistry.
• Completed research enabling detection of compounds in much lower concentrations than possible previously with meaningful real-world medical, environmental, food, and pharmaceutical applications. Titania and germania-based sol-gel materials demonstrated stability under extreme pH conditions, which is advantageous for multiple applications, including proteomics applications.
• Invited by principal investigator for role as co-editor for book on “emerging materials in separation science.”
• Reduced operations costs through reuse of supplies, discovery of materials not fully-utilized, and refurbishment of equipment.
• Resolved stability problems in sol-gel solution by removing excess methanol from solution, and increased efficiency for extraction on sol-gel coated capillaries using pump with high flow rate.
• Saved lab almost $5,000 by evaluating potential purchase of high-performance liquid chromatograph, identifying instrument limitations, and helping to negotiate lower purchase price.
• Prepared innovative research proposal involving development of pH stable high-performance liquid chromatography column for use in early detection of ovarian cancer. Met National Science Foundation format requirements and devised realistic budget for proposed research project.
• Collaborated with student from the St. Petersburg Campus of University of South Florida on study concerning dissolved organic matter in river water. Demonstrated that sol-gel materials had potential applications in preconcentration and analysis of dissolved organic matter in water samples.
ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE
MTS MURRAY HILL LLC, Englewood, FL
