Research Experience

Worked with Professor Stuart Bernstein, Ph.D., at MTSU, researching reading skill development, specifically, finding the best units of representation when converting print to sound. We tested the efficiency of a newly developed test for prosody and looked for the significance of prosody on reading levels. Administered interview and computer based tests during this process. The project earned second place at MTSU’s Scholarsday poster presentation.

Analyzed data for a thesis project examining Sense of Coherence (Antonovsky, 1987) by validating his “Orientation to Life” Questionnaire. I also developed and validated my own Financial Stability Measure/Survey and am relating it to Sense of Coherence as well as other life satisfaction/orientation measures. In essence, it looks at subjective financial health and how this financial health affects the general ability to cope with life. I hope to contribute to the understanding of people’s values and resources (especially financial) and how these traits act in a public health context. While this study does have an underlying health related hypothesis, it is largely a quantitative one and strives to employ new statistical methods in unprecedented ways. (Item Response Theory, Factor Analysis).
