ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

KEY RESPONSIBILITY

• Participates in quality improvement activities and unit staff knowledge improvement programmes.

• Monitoring & ensuring all nursing practices in O.R. are in check with policies and standard of care.

• Maintaining material management and supplies in OR

• Unit coverage in the absence of In-charge

• Support and supervise as a preceptor/mentor to junior and new staffs

• Scrubbing & circulating for cases in all surgical specialties during shift & during emergency coverage.

• Preparing monthly duty rota for the approximately 75 operation theatre nurses

AS A CIRCULATING NURSE

• Checks the operating room, materials, and equipment for proper care and handling.

• Assembles the type and quantity of material and sterile packs and special equipment needed for day’s procedures and for possible emergencies are available in the Operating room

• Participates and documents “Sign In, Time Out, Sign Out” along with the surgical Team.

• Performs counts with the scrub nurse as per policy

• Assists Anesthesiologist and Surgeon in patient positioning and preparation according to standard policies to promote patient safety and comfort during surgical procedure.

• Provides accurate care and handling of specimen as directed by the surgeon and as per policy.

• Documents pertinent data and observations related to the operation throughout the intraoperative phase.

• Accompanies patient to PACU or ICU/ ward and does a complete to the receiving nurse to ensure continuity of care handover

AS A SCRUB NURSE

• Ensures all required equipment, trays, instruments, and other supplies needed for the case procedures are available in the Operating room before scrubbing for the case.

• Follows aseptic techniques when handling instruments and maintains sterile field throughout the procedure.

• Performs counts on all accountable items along with Circulating Nurse as per policy.

• Assist the surgeon in preparing and draping the patient and during the procedure

• Wipes instruments with wet sponge during the surgery so that the instruments are clean and free from blood and debris.

• Ensures completeness of instruments in the tray before sending to CSSD.

• Manages contaminated instruments and supplies as per policies during operation procedure to prevent spread of infection.

AS A PACU NURSE

• Provides immediate post-op care to patients following surgery.

• Monitor patient’s vital signs and other parameters based on the anaesthesia received as per policies and procedures

• Assess patient and intervenes as needed.

• Documents pertinent data and observations related to the post-op care in the PACU documentation.

• Follows post anaesthesia Modified Aldrete scoring system to document patient recovery from anaesthesia and seek approval from Anaesthesiologist to discharge patient with his signature. DECLARATION
