Education Core Co-Director, The National Centers of Excellence in Women's Health are located in academic medical centers throughout the country to establish new models of health care that combine health care services addressing women's health with gender-based research, professional education, promotion of community linkages for improved access to health services, and the provision of leadership positions for women in academic medicine. My role is to lead the educational programs in women’s health.
1998-1999 Virtual Patient Program, Normal Obstetrical Virtual Patient
Macy Foundation PI ($30K)
The goal of this project is to create a library of virtual patients to complement the traditional undergraduate medical education curriculum, especially for areas that are under-represented in the curriculum. My role is to create script for a normal obstetrical virtual patient simulation program, and to help create multi-media episodes for the program, with the goal of providing medical students an opportunity to provide obstetrical counseling in genetics, breastfeeding, preconception, and postpartum depression counseling.

The goals of this project are to compare a soy supplement to placebo in the reduction of hot flash frequency and severity. My role is to assist in study protocol design, recruit and evaluate patients for participation, and to analyze and interpret results.
2002-2005 Incorporating Women’s Health into the Harvard Medical School Curriculum

The goal of this project is to create a curriculum map of women’s health issues in the Harvard Medical School curriculum and determine opportunities to substitute women’s health themed cases for clinical teaching while still maintaining curriculum objectives in year I and II courses. My role is to evaluate the curriculum, and to propose alternative cases to course directors.
2004-05 The Educational Effect of the Virtual Patient Experience in the BIDMC Harvard Medical School OB/GYN Clerkship-

The major goals of this project are to evaluate the effectiveness of the Virtual Patient simulation tool through the use of a standardized patient as an assessment tool on medical student counseling skills compared to traditional clerkship. My role is the creation of virtual patient simulation tool, to design the simulated interview, and to evaluate the results.

The major goals of the project are to incorporate family planning as a stand-along rotation and enhance research and clinical care in family planning. My rotate is to teach residents on the family planning rotation about adolescent family planning, with a particular emphasis on health care disparities.

Harvard Catalyst The Harvard Clinical and Translational Science Center Massachusetts. The major goals of this study are to explore teen decision-making around sexuality and to examine the potential applicability of these findings to outreach and family planning activities for the Roxbury area, and apply these to other communities with high teen pregnancy rates. My role is to design the tool to assess these decisions and to interpret the data.
2010 - 2011 Mycoplasma genitalium and Preterm Delivery at an Urban Community Health center

Harvard Catalyst The Harvard Clinical and Translational Science Center
The goal of the study is to investigate the prevalence of cervical M. Genitalium colonization among women at an urban community health center, and to examine whether pre-existing cervical colonization with M. Genitalium during pregnancy is associated with subsequent pre-term delivery.
2012 Teaching Scripts for OBGYN Educator
Co-Investigator (Atkins PI)
The goal of this project is to determine if OBGYN educators use extensive and interrelated knowledge of teaching organized in the form of “scripts” and what commonality of themes for teaching and common errors in learners exist when common scenarios are utilized. My role is creation of a qualitative database, coding and qualitative analysis of data, manuscript writing, and oversight of study staff (junior faculty and resident).

The goal of the project is to create a best-practice national model for a curriculum in global and community health for OBGYN residents. The pillars of the program include clinical, research/policy, education, and academic partnerships, with a training curriculum that is designed to meet the needs of the local and global communities.
2013-18 Resident as Teacher Best Practice Checklist PI
The goals of this project are to create a best practice checklist based upon expert consensus from a project developed through the HMS Academy Resident as Teacher Interest Group, and to assess the degree to which the Harvard training programs implement the components on the best practice checklist. Sites include BIDMC, Brigham and Women’s, Children’s Hospital, Cambridge Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital
2013-18 Evaluation of Resident as Teacher Video Series PI
The goal of this project is to evaluate the five videos created by the Shapiro Center for Education on Resident as Teacher Topics. My role is study design, development of the assessment tool, recruitment, oversight of the research team performing the evaluation checklist, and eventually evaluation of data and manuscript preparation.
2013-17 Women as Leaders in Academic Medicine PI
The goal of the project is to assess the current state of women in senior leadership positions in OBGYN and seven other core specialties in academic medical centers in the U.S. In particular, the proportion of women that are Chairs, Vice Chairs, Division or Section Heads, and Deans, will be documented, in order to determine progress and regional variations and variations across specialties. My role is in study design, oversight of data collection and storage methods of study team (resident and volunteer), and to assist with evaluating and disseminating results.
2012- 15 Peer Observation of Teaching Co-Investigator (Atkins, PI)
The goal of this project is to create and validate a peer observation of teaching instrument for use in assessment of OBGYN lectures. My role is oversight of the investigators, evaluation of data, and eventually with manuscript preparation.
2006- 12 Resident as Teacher OSTE PI
The goals of this project are to assess the effectiveness of the Resident as Teacher objective structured teaching evaluation (OSTE), in which a trained, standardized student is utilized, along with videotape and immediate faculty feedback, as a method for evaluating and enhancing resident teaching skills. In addition, the goal includes validating an assessment tool specific to the OSTE. My role in the project is OSTE development, case writing, oversight of residents, assessment tool creation and validation, and analysis of results.
2007- 09 HPV Vaccine Attitudes in “Catch Up” Population PI
The goals of this project are to survey of community attitudes toward vaccination in the “catch up” population of 18-26 year olds at the Dimock Center in Roxbury, MA. My role in the project is creation of survey tool, recruitment of subjects, and analysis of results.
2007-11 Resident as Teacher Program for Enhancing Teaching Skills PI
The goals of this project are to use a simulated resident teaching environment to allow residents to practice teaching skills, receive immediate faculty feedback, as well as observe a videotape of themselves teaching. My role in the project is the creation of the evaluation tool, evaluation of resident teaching, provision of feedback, and analysis of results.
2009-11Confusion About Chlamydia and Cervical Cancer Screening PI
The goals of this project are to determine knowledge among young women in an urban community health center about Chlamydia and cervical cancer screening, in light of the reduced and later screening schedules for cervical cancer. My role in the project is creation of survey tool, recruitment of subjects, and analysis of results.
2009-11 Reducing Teen Pregnancy and Enhancing Teen Sexual Health PI
The goals of this project are to reduce teen pregnancy rates, and enhance screening for sexually transmitted infections, utilizing community based participatory research at the Dimock Center. My role in the project is to oversee surveys and structured interviews of patients and oversee data collection and evaluation of attitudes and assessment of health literacy through qualitative methods.
2011-13 Self-swab for High-Risk HPV Detection Among an Urban Shelter Population PI
The goal of this project is to determine the test characteristics and acceptability of vaginal self-swabs for high-risk HPV as a means of screening for cervical dysplasia in an urban shelter population in Boston. My role is in oversight of study team (residents and junior faculty), serve as liaison to the Dimock Shelter staff, to oversee patient care, and to assist with evaluating and disseminating results.
2011-13 Centering Pregnancy Co-PI (Lydeard, PI)
The goal of the project is to assess if Centering Pregnancy (group prenatal visits and education), result in improved breastfeeding rates, reduced substance use, and improved dental care during pregnancy. My role in the project is oversight of the medical care of patients in the Centering Model in the BIDMC at the Dimock Community Health Center, as well as oversight of study design, data collection, and analysis.
2009-14 Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptive Use Among Young Women in an Inner City Boston, Title X-Supported Community Health Center PI
The goals of this project are to examine the use of long-acting reversible contraception among young women in a Title X-supported urban community health center in Boston (Dimock Center) to gain insight into the uptake and continuation of long-acting reversible contractive methods in this population. My role in the project is project idea, initiation, creation and oversight of the study team, to oversee data collection, analysis, and manuscript preparation.
