Recreation Specialist (This is a federal job)

Supervisor: Spring Raines, (ASOR) Assistant Recreation Supervisor

919-***-**** ext:3308/3311)

Okay to contact this Supervisor: Yes

I supervised the operation of the recreation and leisure time programs for the inmate population. I set up, organize and supervise the planning, developing and implementing of special recreation programs, sports leagues and leisure programs, i.e., varsity and beginning flag football, basketball, softball, indoor and outdoor soccer, volleyball, racquetball, handball, kick ball, health, fitness, and wellness programs i.e., aerobics, walking and running programs, health and nutrition programs for adults with mental health disorders, physical disorders such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and inmates with physical disabilities that limit walking, standing and range of motion with upper and lower bodies.

In 2014,I proposed a fitness budget of $50,00.00 to FCC Administration for new fitness equipment for the staff fitness center. It was passed and acquired. In 2011 at FCI #1 Recreation, I proposed and started a Community-Based Outreach program with our inmates. I'm currently working with Recreation Supervisors,BOP Management and Community-Based Outreach businesses that help the homeless i.e., schools, group homes for children and teens or lower income adult individuals that are in need of clothing. I have general population, mental health and Maryland Unit inmates crochet hats, scarves, sweaters, gloves, socks, and blankets for babies, young adults, teens and adults that are in need. I have volunteers and outside businesses that come into our institutions and accept these items from the Recreation Department, BOP Management, and the inmates that have made these items. The BOP staff, inmates and volunteers speak about their experiences and why the projects are important to the community, and why giving back to the community is important. I administer and teach to my fellow Recreation Specialists the basics of utilizing ISDS, SENTRY and BRUNET programs. I work in correlation with Recreation Supervisors and unit teams in setting goals and completing goals for inmates in the ISDS system. I utilize SENTRY to learn the inmate's life history, work history, job history, education/jobs and adding and deleting classes for completion. I work with the business office with BRUNET by completing Special Purchase Orders for purchasing items needed in the Recreation Department, including credit card purchases. I assume the responsibility of the Recreation Supervisor and other recreational staff positions when necessary.

I am currently the BOP Butner Complex Lead Recreation Specialist for all Personal Training and Fitness Certification programs. In 2006, I proposed to Recreation Supervisors and BOP Management to begin national certification programs to inmates that were 18 months from their release date and that had a clean history while in prison to apply and successfully pass certifications for jobs in the fitness industry within their community. After management's approval of the proposal, I have worked in collaboration with

(and personally certified by) the National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association (NESTA) and National Federation Personal Trainers (NFPT) to teach personal training, nutrition, and fitness classes as well as proctor Recreation staff and the general population inmates that qualify for certifications. I'm an instructor and proctor for the National Federation of Personal Trainers (NFPT) and for National Exercise

& Sports Trainers Association (NESTA). I have supervised and proctored 400 inmate certifications each year for 5 institutions since 2006.

I'm currently and have been the lead Recreation Specialist at the Butner complex for conducting health fairs for staff and inmates since 2006. I organize, manage and coordinate with recreation, education, medical, nursing, rehabilitation, dietitians, correctional services, food service, human resources and outside community businesses/resources. I work in correlation with Recreation staff in managing and setting up health and wellness topics/booths for the inmate populations at 5 institutions. At each institution we have 100 to 500 inmates that participate and complete the programs. We cover all mental and physical health needs. In December 2013 I had a staff health fair for our complex. I solely coordinated and managed 30 outside businesses, vendors and BOP complex staff to attend and participate in our event. We had sports orthopedics, foot and ankle doctors, chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncture, nutritionists, rehabilitation, dental, psychologists, nursing, fitness centers, athletic shoe businesses and bike shops represented. We covered every aspect from mind to body. We had over 100 staff that attended and participated in our annual event. I have prepared articles for publication in internal newsletters, etc (league standings/game results); and/or I have drafted announcements for upcoming events (leagues, holidays, courses); and/or I have prepared reports and/or correspondence for supervisor's approval and signature. Federal Bureau of Prisons - Butner, NC

September 2001 to July 2006

I was assigned to various posts within and outside the perimeter of the institution. Many of these posts are critical in nature due to maintaining security and safety within the institution and outside in the community. I have worked all inmate housing units, mental health units, and cadre units. I supervised 20-150 mental health, ambulatory care, and cadre inmates. While working in the housing units I have supervised and managed inmate work details. I provide counseling to inmates on rules and guidelines of the institution. I gave verbal and physical redirection as needed. During body alarms I responded to and assisted fellow staff members to bring the situation under control. A typical shift involved making unit rounds, conducting inmate counts, inmate census checks, accounting for keys and equipment, conducting inmate and cell searches for contraband, safety and equipment checks, collecting and reviewing outgoing mail, reviewing unit bed-book and daily call-outs on inmates, alcohol and drug testing on inmates, collecting data and preparing reports as needed through log books, memorandums and incident reports. As armed perimeter patrol, I have monitored inmate and civilian movement inside as well as outside the perimeter fences and reported any discrepancies to the shift lieutenants. I also worked in correlation with the captain, lieutenants, control center, officers, and medical personnel. Senior Officer

Recreation Therapist

Department and Treatment Team

1995 to 2001

I conducted Department and Treatment Team meetings on a weekly and monthly basis to discuss old and new programs, patient progress, and ways to improve the Activity Services Department. I collected data and prepared reports on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. I also managed my time by participating in unit-based treatment team meetings, quality improvement projects and kept a patient caseload of various units. I assisted with inventory control and submitted requisitions for supplies for supplies and equipment. I created and implemented both individualized and group treatment, leisure education classes, fitness classes, open recreation activities, open gym activities, and special event programs for adults ages eighteen and older with psychiatric illness, mental retardation and developmental disabilities. I developed individualized and group programs on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis to work on short term and long term goals. When I implemented leisure education and fitness groups these were for patients with increased obesity, anorexia, alcohol and drug abuse as well as many other negative behaviors. Many patients had poor coping skills and a decreased understanding of recreation or leisure programs offered to them while in the hospital or when they arrived back into their community. We offered activities such as card games, board games, trivia games, movie outings, church outings, art shows, and trade shows to work on mirroring, social interaction, money management, time management, and community resources. I managed and operated open recreation and gym activities for patients to increase awareness of the wide variety of activities offered, to increase their small and large motor skills, to increase lung and heart capacity, and to just have fun. The activities offered were ping pong, pool, shuffle board, bocce ball, horseshoes, relay games, basketball, softball, volleyball, tennis, walking, and running. I assured a safe therapeutic clinical environment. Health and Fitness Advisor/Youth Sports Advisor
