Leadership

●AP student panels- A huge problem in AP and Honors classes is race disparity. I and about 10 other students of color that took AP and honors classes sat in front of all the teachers in our school that teach those classes to explain to them the challenges of being a person of color in classes with rigor so that they could further aid their students. We shared very personal experiences for this purpose and it was completely worth it because since I have seen many of my teachers change the way they approach students to coordinate to their success.

●ASU-African Student Union member and Current council member- During my Junior year I got the pleasure of being the consultant for Ms.Bah the/ coordinator of Madison East High School’s African Student Union. After spending so much time with her in our first year of being an active club I offered to be president in order to guide ASU into our communities locally and in Africa. I will be creating curriculum for the club such as fund raising events and aid to my students as well as marketing the club for more members and sponsors with Ms.Bah and whomever else is appointed on our board of leads.

●Attended Rotary ethics symposium- The Rotary club of madison held an Ethics symposium at the monona terrace to educate strong high school leaders all over Wisconsin on how to attack ethical dilemmas. We broke up into groups and were given an issue to discuss in a civil manner. The main we were taught to do this is by, recognize an ethical issue, obtain information about the situation,Test alternative actions,Act consistently using your best judgment with the data/facts available,Reflect on your decision, and Yield on your ethical judgments. I was able to grow as a leader that day and even network with Rotary members and other social justice warriors.

●Clean water research and grant writing- While taking geology this year I learned a lot about the making of naturally fresh water. In one class period we did a lab on cleaning water chemically. Watching the water be purified with in seconds I could not help but consider my family back home in Liberia and in places like Flint that would benefit from such technology. I decided that as my final project I would work on a water filter and take data on its progress. The progress was successful and zi will continue to incorporate it in needing communities as work with ASU this year.

●Professional Development class instructor for Art- Every quarter East high school teachers have one professional development day where they learn how to better themselves as teachers. My art teacher was chosen to teach a PD on racial bias but upon realizing that she had no say in the mater she chose me to lead the class. I educated approximately 30 teachers on racial bias and specifically what it feels like to be isolated. It was intimidating but in a usually practical setting I was able to break these teachers down and allow them to have a new understanding of what it feels like to experience racial bias.

●Host & Creator of 31 Days: Art Exhibit- After seeing that my school lacked representation for black students, especially for black history month, I decided to produce an exhibit, exclusively for black artists, in the Ray Stevens Art Gallery. We celebrated photographers, painters, graphic artists, etc. During the opening ceremony, I got to explain the importance of recognizing the beauty in black people. The president of West High School’s BSU rapped, the student body president of my school did a poem, and I invited virtually my entire school’s staff. The gallery literally stayed up for 31 days. I know it will the change the directives in the curriculum of my high school forever.
