Al-hamdulillah I have been conscientious and dedicated with my profession as a surgeon. I am very much enthusiastic at gaining knowledge and learning new skills of surgery. I like teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical students. Actively involved in CMEs as well as carrying out administrative role. I would like to work with a dedicated General and Colorectal surgical team to give my best service to the department and to ailing patients and continue to learn and refine the surgical craft from different team members (Insha-Allah). For the betterment of the human race I would also like to be part of various academic research projects.

ACCADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS:

MBBS: Graduated from ASCOMS (Acharya Sri Chander College of Medical Sciences) Jammu. Got admission for MBBS in the said college after qualifying the competitive examination of BOPE (Board of Professional Examinations) conducted by the Government of Jammu & Kashmir in 2002. Completed my MBBS in 2007 from ASCOMS, under University of Jammu.

ASCOMS is one of the premier institutes catering the health care needs of the Jammu division of Jammu & Kashmir. ASCOMS has an associated hospital of about 500 bed strength. Besides having academically sound various non-clinical (Anatomy, Physiology & Biochemistry) and para-clinical (pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, hematology, forensic medicine) departments; ASCOMS has all clinical specialty departments (Community medicine, ENT, Ophthalmology, General Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology). Also there are various super-specialty units (like cardiology, neurology, cardiothoracic surgery, pediatrics surgery, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, urology etc.) fully functional in ASCOMS.

MS in General Surgery: Joined MS General Surgery in May 2010 at SKIMS, Srinagar after qualifying the competitive examination of BOPEE (Board of Professional Entrance Examinations) conducted by the Government of Jammu & Kashmir. Completed MS General Surgery in May 2013 from SKIMS under its Deemed University. During this period of three years of MS, besides working in the department of General Surgery, we have to rotate in various superspeciality departments like Urology, Plastic surgery, Paediatric surgery, Neurosurgery, Cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Accident and Emergency and Orthopaedics. During the whole course I have managed OPD and ward patients and attended the main and emergency theaters and had been on regular night duties as per duty rosters.

Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical sciences (SKIMS) has been established in 1982 and is the only multi-specialty institute giving tertiary care treatment to the seven million population of valley Kashmir. SKIMS presently has an inpatient bed capacity for about 900 patients for various specialty and super-specialty departments. The various departments in the SKIMS are General Medicine, Geriatic Medicine, Pulmonology, Medical Gastroenterology, endocrinology, Nephrology, General Surgery, Pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, cardiology, neurology, cardiothoracic surgery, paediatric surgery, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, urology with Kidney Transplant Unit, GI surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Radiodiagnosis, Clinical hematology, Nuclear Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation etc etc.

Post-MS Experience of 3 years as senior resident/registrar in General Surgery (SKIMS) – joined in 2013 and completed in 2016

Job description in MS and post-MS senior residency:

1.Attending the OPDs and working up and evaluating the patients for surgical procedures.

2.Doing ward-rounds.

3.Regular night duties in wards, accident and emergency and in emergency theaters.

4.Attending Minor OTs to perform minor procedures like proctoscopies, circumcision, wound dressings, wound debridements, excision of lipomas, warts and corns, excision biopsies of lymph nodes etc.

5.Performing various emergency surgical procedures like appendectomies, ileostomies, colostomies, duodenal perforation repairs, gastro-jejunostomies, ememergency laprotomies for trauma patients, spleenectomies, managing bullet and firearm injury patients, placement of ICTD for hemothorax/pnumothorax, managing of head trauma (EDH,SDH), managing of bear-maul injuries, management and debridement and amputation of diabetic foot etc.

6.Doing many major surgeries independently like lap/open cholecystectomy, lap/open appendectomy, heriotomy, hernioplasty, hemorrhoidectomy, orchedectomy etc.

7.Doing under supervision or assisting the senior consultants in many major surgeries like thyroidectomies, MRM, gastrectomy, hemicolectomies, anterior resection, LAR, APR, whipple’s procedures, hepatobiliary surgeries, various onco-surgeries, Nephrectomies, kidney transplant, pyloplasties, pylolithotomies etc etc

Completed 2-year fellowship training in colorectal surgery, in the department of Colorectal Surgery at SKIMS Soura, Srinagar Kashmir.

Fellowship in colorectal surgery is the recently started post-doctoral program at department of Colorectal Surgery SKIMS, Srinagar Kashmir. It is a two years program; first of its kind in north India and I am among the first two student to get admission in this fellowship after clearing the national level competitive exam for this. After the completion of 2 years I appeared for exit exam in November 2018 for the award of this fellowship degree and cleared the said examination. I also submitted my thesis project titled, “Ghost Ileostomy versus Covering ileostomy in Restorative Rectal Resection for Carcinoma Rectum-A Randomized Comparative Study”. This project was must to get the fellowship degree in colorectal surgery.

Job description in Fellowship in colorectal surgery: During the fellowship course I been specially trained in making diagnosis, conservative and surgical management, routine post-operative management, management of surgical complications and post-operative follow-up of almost all colorectal surgical problems like colorectal cancers, diverticulitis, sigmoid and caecal volvulus, ulcerative colitis, intestinal obstruction, gut perforation and peritonitis, entero-cutaneous fistula, anal fissure, fistula in ano, hemorrhoids, pilonidal sinuses, rectal prolapse, recto-vaginal fistula, chronic pelvic pain, chronic constipation and obstructive defecation syndrome (ODS). For management of these colorectal surgery patients I have been doing following works:

1.Attending the OPDs and working up and evaluating the colorectal patients for diagnostic and surgical procedures.

2.Doing morning and evening ward-rounds.

3.Acting as ward-incharge.

4.Attending colorectal patients in Accident and Emergency department and in emergency theaters.

5.Doing diagnostic tests like DRE, proctoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, taking biopsy of rectal lesions, saline load testing and sphictomonometry and assisting in colonoscopies.

6.Performing various emergency surgical Procedures like intestinal obstruction, gut perforations, sigmoid volvulus, ileostomies, colostomies, Hartmann’s procedure, emergency laprotomies for colorectal trauma patients (Road traffic accidents, bullet and firearm injury)

7.Doing many major surgeries independently like hemorrhoidectomy, Delorme’s and Altimier’s procedures for rectal prolapse, sphincterotomies, fistulectomies, Ghost ileostomis, MIPH, hemicolectomies etc.

8.Doing under supervision or assisting the senior consultants in many major surgeries (open as well as laproscopic) like right and left hemicolectomies, anterior resections, LAR, ultra-LAR, APR (Classical, intersphincteric and extra-levator APR), anal sphincter reconstruction, TAMIS For early rectal cancers, Trans-anal trans-abdominal (TATA) resection for rectal cancers, suture rectopexy, ventral mesh rectopexy, resection rectopexies, STARR (stapled trans-anal rectal resection) for ODS and rectocoele, perineal body reconstruction & rectovaginal fistula surgeries, total proctocolectomy with IPAA for Ulcerative colitis etc etc.

Attended ACRSI instructional course of Association of Colorectal Surgeons of India in April 2017 at Jaipur, Rajastan India.

Passed fellowship exam (FACRSI) of Association of colorectal Surgeons of India held in Aurangabad, Maharashtra India in April 2018 and secured 2nd position in this exam.

Got fellowship in Anorectal manometry, biofeedback training and pelvic floor diseases at Zen Hospital Mumbai under the mentorship of Dr Roy Pattankar.

Awarded fellowship of Association of Colorectal Surgeons of India (FACRSI) at annual conference of ACRSI (ACRSICON18) on 21ist September 2018 at Kolkata.

Got 3rd prize in the paper presentation at ACRSICON-2018 at Kolkata, India.
