The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center

410 W. 10th Ave.

Columbus, OH 43210

Dear Madam/Sir,

My name is Jia Cheng, currently studying Graduate Entry Family Nurse Practitioner specialty at the College of Nursing of the Ohio State University with a GPA of 3.96. I am in the process of transferring to the Psychiatric Mental Health Practitioner program. I am writing to express my interest in pursuing a full-time or part-time Nurse job after completing the pre-licensure portion of the Graduate Entry program in December and sit for the NCLEX exam. I am interested in working at a psychiatric and behavioral health Hospital.

I am a compassionate and energetic individual, with patient care-centered experiences that have enhanced my core belief in helping people in need. I have this foundational belief in my life. With my unique background in business logistics engineering and accounting; unlike traditional nurses, this allows me to see many different perspectives than others. My diversified background has made me a very organized person with excellent time management skills, enabling me to perform effectively and efficiently in various procedures, and working extremely well under pressure. I also make sure everything gets the attention needed while analyzing and making the best decision in chaotic situations.

Psychiatric nursing is where my passion is. I have been drawn to the psychosocial problems my patients have and how they affect their overall wellbeing. I have a gift for speaking and treating that aspect of my patients and would like to gain more knowledge and help these patients professionally. I worked and interacted with psychiatric patients on many occasions at Harding and the OSU Emergency Department. I also had the privilege to work hand-in-hand with a nurse practitioner at a camp for patients with various mental illnesses. Throughout my psychiatric experiences, I witnessed how therapeutic and comforting interactions can effectively communicate with patients with mental illnesses. I understand patients have all different characteristics in the psychiatric world, and I love to learn all different perspectives of mental illnesses. I enjoy psychiatric clinical works and never afraid to put myself out there to listen, empathize with the patient, and work with the family to offer the best patient care.

With my Float Pool Student Nurse Associate position, I had the chance to work with patients and Nurses in many different units: ICU, SICU, Neuro, heart, psychiatric, psychiatric emergency room, emergency department, triage, trauma, rehab, postpartum, and other departments. The Float Pool experience gave me so much knowledge in dealing with different situations, gaining valuable first-hand experience in various units, working with multiple specialties and with diverse patient populations. I am extremely flexible and learn on the go. I made sure to do an excellent job at each place I worked giving patients the best care I can. I am a creative and humorous individual. My personality helps me communicate and build rapport with patients and families.

In addition, I am currently under preceptorship at the James Cancer Hospital, working at the 16th hemolytic unit. The experience allowed me to put the nursing process in action, and I was able to identify and give important interventions and collect critical information to communicate with providers. Additionally, I work with the whole interdisciplinary team for the patient's best health outcomes. I put my clinical skills directly into practice, performing duties in my scope of practice, and delegating adequately. I experience the cohesion and collaboration of the care team. For example, the interaction with all nurse colleagues and PCAs, UCAs, TPs, OPs, and Housekeepers. Besides the James experience, I also had clinical in the Ohio State University Harding Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, and Brain and Spine Hospital, Nationwide Children's Hospital NICU unit, Riverside Hospital Neonatal, Labor, and Delivery unit. All these experiences allow me to adapt well to different situation, to feel confident in facing unpredicted challenges, and to solve problem with my critical thinking and evidence-based research.

After receiving my RN license, I look forward to embracing the challenges and providing my patients and community the resources and education to help them achieve their mental and overall health goals and provide the quality care they deserve. Thank you for your time and consideration in allowing me the opportunity. It is genuinely appreciated. I would love to discuss the position further and provide information as needed for the interview process afterward.

Sincerely,

Jia (Kirsten) Cheng
