PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Engaged in the acquirement of professional knowledge of 32 years since the obtaining of a primary medical qualification (MBBS) and 27 years since the obtaining of a specialist medical qualification in Ophthalmology, issued by a medical school recognised by World Health Organisation (WHO).

Formulated Post-graduate thesis on "Evaluation of early intraocular lenses" enabling higher training as Anterior Segment and Refractive Surgeon. Took part in many training and skill transfer courses on IOL surgery.

Obtained clinical attachment to work in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Royal Free Hospital, Lawn Road division of the Royal Free Hampstead NHS trust, Pond Street, London for one month.

Interacted with world renowned Ophthalmic surgeons at the famous Moorefield’s Eye Hospital, London. Experienced the functioning of NHS hospitals in England.

Attended training by leading authority and inventor of SRK formula Manus C. Kraff MD, as the course director at the Arvind Eye Hospital, Madurai, WHO collaborating center India.

Six months of intensive training in corneal grafting and refractive surgery was obtained at Bangalore West Lions Eye Hospital and Cornea Grafting Center, one the few eye hospitals in India to have extensive facility for eye donation, with grants from Lions International.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Apart from performing routine duties pertaining to the care of patients with increasing responsibility, undertook formal teaching assignment at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Medical College, Bangalore in the department of Clinical Anatomy for medial undergraduate students for two years. It involved holding lecturers for different batches of about 50 students in each classroom. Students were tested and examined during dissections, demonstrations and practical classes.

CURRENT EMPLOYMENT AND EXPERIENCE

Employed for hospital based practice as Consultant Ophthalmologist at Manipal Hospital as one of the seven visiting Consultants, in the department of Ophthalmology.

Founder of Roshan Eye Care Center, where employment is on a full time basis, since 1988. It is managed by a Board of Directors and has 5 sub-speciality divisions. It is a dedicated tertiary Ophthalmic referral center with state of the art facilities for diagnostic procedures, lasers and micro-surgeries. As tertiary eye care centers, referred patients who underwent operation elsewhere, are also treated either medically or surgically. Interpretation/reporting of specialized procedures such as Corneal Topography, Visual field assessment, Scans Angiograms etc., are also carried out in the outpatient department. Use of Imagenet for documentation and education, Applanation tonometer, Indirect Ophthamoscope etc., and measurement of errors of refraction and their appropriate treatment including contact lens work, is done routinely.

I operate 3 days in a week. In each session, 5-6 Cataract IOL surgeries, 1-2 Corneal Grafting and 1-2 Glaucoma surgeries are performed by me, either under topical, peribulbar or general anaesthesia. Phacoemulsification with foldable intraocular lens is the most performed surgery with IOL implantations, on almost all age groups, with special interest in suture-less small incision surgeries by both phaco and manual techniques.

I also perform laser vision correction. On an average ten patients per week undergo the procedure under topical anesthesia. I have performed more than two thousand refractive Laser vision corrections (LASIK, PRK & PTK) using B & L technolas 217 with custom ablation. Argon and double frequency YAG lasers are used routinely for PRP's, PCO's & Iridotomies in the outpatient department.

MEDICAL AND SPECIALIST REGISTRATION

Registered permanently with the Karnataka Medical Council, state body of the Indian Medical Council, to practice medicine since 23.3.1980 (No. 19065).

COURSES AND CONFERENCES

Invited to attend the 2002 Joint Meeting of the American Academy of ophthalmology and the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology, at Orlando, Florida, U.S.A.

Taken active part in International Ophthalmic courses and conference held in U.S.A., Singapore, Colombo and India.

Annual Conferences of the all India Ophthalmological Society, Southern Regional Ophthalmic and Karnataka Ophthalmologic society - national, regional and state Ophthalmic bodies respectively, were regularly attended and contributed to academically.

Skill transfer courses and workshop in IOL and refractive surgeries were attended and organized.

Monthly clinics of the Bangalore Ophthalmologists Association were organized.
