1999-2013 Planning & Development Services Tucson, AZ.

City of Tucson

Plans Reviewer – Floodplain/Engineering Section.

The main responsibility of my job was reviewing detailed engineering Improvement plans for compliance with local development standards and applicable governing codes (including the new COT Unified Development Code). The improvement plans consisted of, but were not limited to: Paving and Sewer Plans, Site Plans and/or Grading Plans. If corrections were needed to the plans, then comments and redlines would be sent to the client for corrections. The main objective was to ultimately approve the plans and issue the permits.

Reviewed the detailed Drainage Plans and Drainage reports submitted in conjunction with the civil improvement Plans.

Reviewed and permitted Floodplain applications for compliance with local and FEMA floodplain regulations.

Reviewed Tentative and Final Plats, Subdivision Assurances and Home Owner’s Associations Codes, Covenants and Restrictions for recordation.

Completed various drainage and floodplain courses and seminars for training purposes including Hec-Ras and FEMA classes.

Worked closely with all in house departments when questions on engineering issues arose usually offering comment and opinion.

Responsible for creating and maintaining the repository of all approved drainage reports submitted for official or cursory review.

Responsible for creating, editing and maintaining the engineering counter schedule for the staff.

Created new Site Plan, Grading Plan, Drainage Plan and other various stamps that replaced the outdated stamps used to “stamp and approve” a set of plans.

Staffed the engineering counter at the PDSD at the designated times (usually for 15 hrs./week) for the “walk-thru” review. The “walk-thru” review for the general public consisted of, more often then not, approving Site Plans for floodplain compliance.

I was the liaison between the Permit and Codes division of the COT Transportation section and PDSD engineering section, often mediating solutions between the two depts. The Permit and Codes division is responsible for permitting work within the right-of-way. PDSD is responsible for all development on site.

I frequently attended meetings during my work week with clients to go over my plan comments and often suggesting solutions to their code violations. However, I was careful not to design the project for them.

Field visits were often required to verify conditions, to answer our inspectors’ questions and/or to meet with clients to go over their concerns and/or solutions on their projects.

I was the designated Spanish speaker for the Engineering Section. I solely translated for our dept. in which I balanced along with my daily duties. Also I was often called upon by different departments at PDSD to translate for them. The community has many Hispanic members and the challenge often became daunting.

Because of my experience, I was often called into meetings by different departments seeking my engineering advice, which I immensely enjoyed.
