Hired as a milkhand, I was responsible for cleaning, milking, and post milk care of the cows. After 3 days I was offered the chance to train as a Night Herdsman. I accepted the position and was responsible for the health and comfort of the cows during the night and early morning hours. I treated sick cows, helped in the delivery of newborn calves, fed newborn calves, checked the feed and bedding for the cows, helped with the milking if the need arose, walked the groups and checked on the herd numerous times during the night. In September, I took over as Calf Feeding Manager. I was responsible for the care of calves from newborns to 6 months old. Feeding milk, along with a grain mix ration to the youngest, I also fed the older calves the grain mix along with hay. I treated the calves with medicine and vaccinations, all of which was kept with hand written records later inventoried into a computer by the owner. I operated one ton diesel dually trucks and pulled 24 foot gooseneck trailers, 120 horse tractors, and a Gehl skid steer loader without incident while on the farm.
