Dr. S. Ashok Kumar

CAREER SUMMARY:

I am an environmental engineer with over 5 years of expertise in membrane separation for water and wastewater treatment. My postdoctoral research focused on finding nano and graphene oxide-based membranes for desalination and wastewater treatment processes with low energy efficiency. In my Ph.D., I focused on the development of thin-film composite membranes for the treatment of textile effluents. Further, I am seeking a new challenge in the field of membrane technology for water and wastewater treatment with experience in 5 years. I am highly motivated to utilize my skills, pursue my research career, and contribute to the development of my organization.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:

Feb 2024- Present R&D Engineer – Applications (UF Hollow Fibre Membrane production for wastewater treatment) in Titanium Equipment And Anode Manufacturing Company Private Ltd (TEAM), Vandalur, Chennai.

Sep 2021-Jan 2024 R&D Research Engineer with 2.5 years of management experience. We concentrated on multiple processes such as tree plantation, water and wastewater treatment & comprehensive analysis, membrane synthesis, desalination, material charcterization, iodide removal in brine stream, ammonia removal in TSW, and bricks preparation using waste sludge in Chemfab Alkalis Limited, Puducherry, India.

Jun 2018-July 2019 Guest faculty at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Puducherry Technological University, (erstwhile Pondicherry Engineering College) Puducherry.

July 2015-May 2016 Project Assistant at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, India

EXPERIENCE AS A RESEARCH FELLOW

My research interest lies largely in exploring the polymeric-based thin-film nanocomposite membrane synthesis for wastewater treatment. Nanocomposite membrane synthesis and characterization Thin-film nanomembranes have shown great promise in treating textile wastewater, which often contains a range of pollutants including dyes, heavy metals, and organic compounds.

Material Selection

Advanced nanomembranes for textile wastewater treatment often incorporate materials like graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, nanofibers, or other nanostructures. These materials offer high surface area, mechanical strength, and chemical reactivity, making them effective in capturing and degrading pollutants.

Polymeric Matrix

The choice of polymer is crucial in nanomembrane synthesis. Materials like polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polyethersulfone (PES), and polysulfone

(PSf) are commonly used due to their compatibility with nanomaterials and excellent membrane-forming properties.

Synthesis Techniques

Phase Inversion Method, Interfacial polymerization, and Electrospinning. Characterization Techniques

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy

(TEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy

(FTIR), Gas Permeation and Separation Testing.

Mechanical Testing

This assesses the mechanical strength and flexibility of the membrane. Filtration and Separation Efficiency

The membrane's performance is evaluated by measuring its ability to selectively allow or block the passage of specific molecules or particles. Long-term Stability and Durability

Membranes are tested under various operating conditions to assess their stability over time.

RESEARCH DURING Ph.D.:

Ph.D. Title Development of ultrafiltration and nanofiltration membranes for treatment of synthetic and real-time effluent of textile industry wastewater.

The main objective of my Ph.D. was to develop ultrafiltration and nanofiltration membranes for textile effluents.

Synthesis and characterization of UF membranes

Synthesis and Characterization of TFC Membranes

Design of experiments for TFC membranes

Synthesis and Characterization of TFN membranes

Membrane performance evaluation.
