Dear Hiring Manager:

I’m writing you to provide a reference for Jeff Christian who tended bar at my Chicago establishment, The Dram Shop, for over 12 years. Whether it’s showing up on time or early to every shift, remaining sober behind the bar, or spotting new trends and passing them along to me so I could order effectively, it is evident through his actions that Christian takes his role seriously as a career bartender.

Christian’s military training helps give him the ability to stay focused. Although he was supervised when hired, Christian quickly proved his abilities and trustworthiness, and within months I moved the schedule around so he was working solo on high-volume shifts (closing every Thursday through Saturday). He was not only dedicated to the success of the business

(as evidenced by the higher-than-normal totals he would ring in at the end of the night), he was dedicated to the way I wanted my business run.

Another one of Christian’s great skills is a sense of ownership. As mentioned, if Christian spotted new trends, he would pass them on to me so I could order accordingly. If anything happened at the bar, Christian would use his good judgement, think on his feet, and let me know as soon as possible by proactively calling to say “‘X’ happened tonight, so I did ‘Y’ to resolve it.” Finally, Christian is very engaged with product - he could speak knowledgeably about anything on our shelves including 80 whiskies, 50 beers, and an equally extensive array of other varieties of liquors including ciders, cordials, rums, tequilas, etc.. Christian is a confident volume bartender with strong communication skills, good judgement, and well-honed professionalism. It was a loss to have him let me know he was leaving the Chicago area, but I wish him well and am happy to serve as a reference for him.
