Director of Distribution

With annual revenues of $2.8 billion, Scotts is the largest marketer and manufacturer of lawn and garden products in the world. Reporting to the Vice President of Supply Chain and managing a staff of 8 direct reports, responsibilities include the development and execution of logistics strategies for 36 manufacturing and distribution locations and $240 million in total transportation spend. Additionally, responsible for the transportation budgeting and execution of 3 business units, vendor selection, negotiation as well as developing cost/service KPI’s and industry benchmarking.

Reduced freight costs YoY in the Soils division by $12.1MM through the development of capacity planning tools, critical analysis and performance dashboards.

$11MM in additional pricing gains with key customers through the development of freight surcharge and cost to serve programs.

Established LTL shipment optimization program which increased average shipment size by 12% and resulted in $2.4MM in transportation savings.

Instituted annual RFP for TL and Intermodal transportation which resulted in $750K in annualized savings.

Developed best practice and benchmarking processes for warehousing which reduced spend $3.2MM annually.

Ashland Inc. – Dublin, Ohio 2006-2012

Director of Corporate Transportation

Hired in 2006 as Manager of Transportation and then promoted to Director of Corporate Transportation in 2008. Ashland is an $8.7 billion diversified chemical company with sales and operations in 110 countries around the world. Reporting to the Director of Global Supply Chain and managing a staff of six direct and 12 indirect reports, responsibilities included establishing and executing logistics strategy for all modes of transportation, transportation budgeting for five lines of business, managing Ashland’s $250MM transportation spend, vendor selection and negotiations as well as optimizing Ashland’s 450-unit private fleet.

Developed and executed a comprehensive carrier rationalization program that reduced Ashland’s Truckload carrier base by 44% and saved $5MM over a two-year period. This program won both an Ashland Chairman’s Award and a Gold Medal Award from Logistics Management Magazine.

Transformed the Logistics organization from a silo model to a regional logistics model. This led to the implementation of more than 400 cost reduction projects resulting in $53.5MM in annualized savings.

Led the Logistics analysis prior to the $2.6 billion acquisition of Hercules which identified $3MM in transportation savings. Post-acquisition $5MM in transportation savings achieved in ten months while reducing logistics headcount by 14%.

Developed analytical processes which led to partnering with Sales and Supply Chain Planning to optimize Composite Polymers manufacturing supply chain. This resulted in transportation savings of $350K and reduced order fulfillment time by 1.4 days.

Reduced total transportation costs by 5.24% or $17MM in 2008 while absorbing over $18MM in additional fuel expense.

UnionTools, Inc. – Columbus, Ohio 2005-2006

Director of Logistics

A private equity held company (Oaktree Capital) UnionTools was the United States second largest manufacturer and distributor of non-powered lawn and garden tools. A $100MM marketer with manufacturing operations, joint ventures, suppliers and customers both domestically and internationally. Reporting to the Senior VP of Operations, responsibilities included the management of UnionTools $7MM transportation spend, vendor selection and management, rate negotiation, P&L management and the development of KPI’s. Additionally, responsible for identifying and implementing cost reduction strategies in support of the manufacturing, marketing, purchasing and warehousing functions. In 2006 UnionTools was acquired by Ames True Temper, the market leader, and fully integrated into their business model.

Led the Network Design Team that developed a global operating strategy, which saved $4.3MM annually. This strategy centered upon Manufacturing Rationalization, Global Sourcing, China Direct Import to Customer as well as Inventory Reduction.

Reduced year on year transportation spend by 13% from 2004 to 2005 by renegotiating LTL tariffs resulting in savings of $350K and establishing a core carrier program which saved $150K.

Developed an Economic Order Quantity model which improved annual inventory turns by 1.3 and reduced total inventory 16%.

Improved container utilization from 82% to 90%, resulting in savings of $190K. Reduced expedite spend by 97% saving $265K.

Integrated global vendor base creating savings of $450K across two product categories.

Exel – Columbus, Ohio 2001-2005

Director of Operations

Hired in 2001 as Regional Manager of Operations then in 2002 promoted to Director of Operations. Exel is one of the world’s largest providers of third party warehousing and logistics solutions, with over $10B in annual revenues and 130,000 employees in more than 120 countries. Reporting to the Senior VP of Operations, responsible for the start-up and management of distribution facilities servicing Maytag, Sears, Miele, Williams-Sonoma, Babies R’ Us, Crate & Barrel as well as other customers. Responsibilities included site selection, vendor negotiation, regional P&L management and client integration. Managed Exel Direct Network operations in the Midwest, Eastern US and Puerto Rico with a footprint of 2.4MM sq feet, 9 direct reports and 17 indirect reports.

Executed turnarounds in five financially failing locations. Improved operating margin in each by an average of 12.06 points.

Successfully managed 17 start-up operations in the US and Puerto Rico.

Took over the Lower Midwest region in 2004 and improved the regions operating margin from 2.4% to 13.2% in 6 months, reduced regions costs in temporary labor, overtime and freight claims by 74%, or $65K.

Implemented a WMS and OMS into 4 DC’s, which resulted in a 35% reduction in picking labor within three weeks. Both implemented on time and on budget with no interruption of service to the customer.

Worked as the Operations Liaison to strategic customers. Established and managed division level customer specific KPI’s.

Columbus, OH facility received “Eastern Region Facility of the Year” honors in 2001, Pittsburgh, PA received “Eastern Region Facility of the Year in 2002”.

Overnite Transportation– Richmond, VA 1997-2001

Hired as a Dock Supervisor in 1997, then in 1998 promoted into the Executive Development program. Overnite Transportation, with revenues of $1B, was the United States largest non-union LTL carrier. Primary responsibilities included goal-setting, training, forecasting and workload prioritization. Familiar with freight classification, freight rating and pricing, as well as DOT and hazardous materials regulations.
