Mr. Allen has over 40 years experience developing embedded software for spacecraft applications. I am confident that he can assist you in some capacity.

His principle experience has been in the development of embedded software for spacecraft operations. He has developed spacecraft engineering data acquisition / command distribution systems, provided system engineering, and developed flight software to perform these functions for a variety of spacecraft including: James Webb Space Telescope, EOS-Aura, Eos-Aqua, Messenger, Geo-Lite, XTE, SAMPEX, GRO, and HST. Mr. Allen has hands-on experience with all phases of the spacecraft life cycle ranging from concept development, to requirements development, to design, to development, to integration and test, to launch, and through operations.

He has also developed code for the Apple iPhone and iPad. He published three applications that are available in the iTunes Store.

He has developed and/or managed the development of Flight Software for 38 different flight processors on 22 flight programs. With more than 200 “processor- years” of operations, no flight software system has ever failed on orbit. He has a track record of bringing new technology into operational use.

He designs systems from minimal requirements. He delivers reliable code rapidly.

Highlights of Experience:

NASA Spacecraft Servicing Capabilities Office (SSCO) – Most recently, during the past year, he developed a 15,000 SLOC system to provide spacecraft with an essential core of Command and Data Handling Capabilities. Development was complete within a calendar year. Currently he is porting this software to a Raspberry Pi processor.

In the previous year, he developed flight software for the International Space Station support component call the “Ammonia Leak Locator,” and other software for Ground Support Test Equipment and simulators. Developed in less than a year, this system is comprised of more than 20,000 Source Lines of code. This component is scheduled for launch in December 2015.

iPhone Apps – He has published three applications that are available in Apple’s iTunes store. If you want to see examples of his work, download (they’re free):

Java Sudoku – An application for playing Sudoku;

WordSchool – A compendium of word games, and tools for playing word games;

Java Holdem – An application for playing Texas Holdem with computer players on your iPhone.

NASA’s JWST Program Support – He provided engineering support to assist in the definition of requirements and interfaces.

NASA’s Aqua and Aura Missions - He was awarded Goddard Space Flight Center’s “Contractor Excellence Award for work in solving flight data system problems.

C&DH Flight Operating System Software for the (Essential Services Node) – He developed an operating system used on more 20 spacecraft processors.

Messenger Spacecraft - Mercury Laser Altimeter - He implemented data system software for the MLA instrument - All data system software was completed in less than nine months.

FAISAT - Commercial communication satellite - Lead software system engineer. Developed a “software bus / command script based” C&DH system.

HOST - Hubble Orbiting System Test Facility - Implemented the flight software for a shuttle based flight experiment that integrated to six different discrete instrument interfaces. Completed development in less than seven months.

SAMPEX, XTE and TRMM C&DH Flight Software - Lead software system engineer.

The XTE design and code were re-used on TRMM, MAP, EO-1, and other spacecrafts.

GRO, EUVE, TOPEX, and UARS spacecraft - - Developed the flight software used to format telemetry and process commands on these processors.

Hubble Space Telescope's Central Unit and Science Data Formatter (HST CU/SDF) – He developed flight firmware for HST. Every Hubble image passes through the component with his software that has performed flawlessly for three decades.
