Employment
Director and manager S&L Construction 2005 - 2012
Own Business 1999 - 2005
I continued building on my strengths and knowledge of the construction in this role. This position involved the day to day running of a business which employed up to 15 people, from various trades. During this time I oversaw every project undertaken, from sales and surveying through to completion and customer satisfaction. I had to ensure that the project manager was fully briefed and also co-ordinate deliveries and other tradesmen to ensure fluidity during the projects. There is a heavy emphasis on working with the customer in this role and ensuring that any design created (manually, or recently on computer) meets with approval and is transferred to the project. This role also involved the financial side of running a business, from balancing the budget to wages.
Sales manager Allied Paving 1998 - 1999
During my time at Allied Paving I was involved in co-ordinating quite a large team of foot canvassers. This role also included training the team in sales. I developed even greater organisational skills during this period as I had to sort appointments and ensure that everyone in my team knew where they were going. It was key to get the best out of everyone within the team, but also being honest with them. Due to the success of my team, I was also involved in establishing 2 other branches for the company.
Sales area manager Solar Services 1993 - 1998
My role initially was to achieve certain sales targets set out by the company; my previous experience within the gas industry helped being able to visualize heating systems, but also make the comparisons between gas and solar. Due to meeting and surpassing the sales targets, I became responsible for a team of sales people and had to report regularly to the managing director, this helped to develop my communication skills. Also during this time I developed customer relations, from telephone manner, through to finalisation of sales.
Sales person Dolphin Bathrooms 1992 - 1993
This job was based in Bristol and involved both sales and design. I was given the opportunity to attend various training courses on sales and design, which have proved invaluable as my career has developed. It was also at this stage that I became familiar with finance packages and pricing structures.
Heating and Plumbing Self-employed 1989 - 1992
I branched out on my own at this point, undertaking plumbing and heating work in the domestic environment. This was where I became familiar with business budgets and the necessary requirements needed for running a small business.
Heating Engineer British Gas (Southern) 1979 - 1989
Duties included everything from servicing through to installation of all gas appliances, as well as fault finding and correcting. I completed my apprenticeship with British Gas, which led to employment after.
Skills
I have developed the following skills during my career:
Communication: Effective customer relations, from sales, through to completion of projects and dealing with problems and unexpected situations. Effective employee relations, ensuring projects are understood and completed to customer satisfaction. Delivering presentations.
Teamwork: Working with and managing other staff in the workplace. Running a youth football team for 5 years.
Problem Solving: This is a key everyday skill required for the career path I have had, as well as being a parent.
Organizational: Attending exhibitions promoting the company. Co-ordinating sales teams. Everything that comes with running a business.
IT: Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word. Developing knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher, am able to develop work in these programmes, but am working to be able to set them up initially.
Interests/Hobbies
I played football to a fairly high standard for 20 years and then transferred this passion into managing a local youth side from Under 9s through to under 16s. Since retiring from football I have taken up golf, playing weekly. I am continually working on developing my IT skills, as I believe it to be crucial in today’s society. Alongside this, I am an active Dad and enjoy spending any spare time with my family.
