Johnson Controls, Inc., Silverdale, WA 1994-1996

Director of Construction & Contract Administration

Developed new communications with customer that increased customer satisfaction and project transparency. Developed management tools to assist in tracking performance, budgets, compliance, deliverables, warranty work, etc. One of these tools was nicknamed the “Goss Report.” The Goss Report was an ‘action-item’ report that identified a 7 year backlog of work that had an open issue(s) that had never been closed out by the customer. The Goss Report identified that 88% of the open items remained open due to the customer’s failure to close the open action. Johnson Controls was evaluated each quarter and based upon their evaluation score they were awarded a profit. Prior to my arrival on the project the most the project had made on a $65 million annual contract was $100,000.00. After the Goss Report was discussed with the Base Commander our quarterly evaluation scores moved from an average of 82% to an average of 97% with my division receiving scores of 99%. Profits went from $100,000 to $1.3 million before Johnson Controls lost the contract re-bid. My project won every local and national customer satisfaction awards during my tenure including the prestigious Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award, the nation’s only Presidential award for performance excellence, and, the Washington State Quality Award for large businesses. My team and I were recognized for our leadership in the project total quality management program and success. I implemented a new approach of communication and cooperation between the company disciplines and Navy disciplines that resulted in closing out the year-end back log on the last day of the fiscal year, without incurring one hour of overtime, the first time in the projects history. Provided accurate and responsive counsel and advice to management on program legal issues concerning contract, construction, program management, human resources and customer concerns.

Negotiated a simple contract change that resulted in clearing a one million dollar billing issue that had remained on the books for over one year at Mentor Graphics Corporation. Finalized $350 million of contract negotiations on final day of sales quarter breaking every sales record in Mentor Graphics history.
