Performed backup and recovery for campus users.
Internetwork Associate
Principal duties include:
Initial preparation and configuration of newly purchased CISCO switches and routers
Update to the latest release of CISCO Catalyst IOS
Load initial configuration template and finetune configuration as needed
Test the switches and routers in a Test Network Environment to ensure proper functions before deployment in the production network.
Maintenance and Network Upgrades
Upgrade network cables, interface cards, router interface and memory modules
Configure IOS Auto-upgrade manager to enabled switches and routers to automate IOS upgrade procedures for campus-wide switches and routers.
Setup ftp, tftp, or http connections for IOS updates
Network Security and Optimization
Configure network access list (ACL)
Proper configuration and positioning of Intrusion Detection System, firewall, and servers
Bandwidth management through traffic shaping and scheduling algorithms
IT Technical Staff
Principal duties include:
Setup and configure servers for core enterprise services such as email, web, directory, dns, dhcp, firewall, network storage, ip telephony, print, etc.
Most of these services run on a single FREEBSD Jail virtual environment which is essentially a virtual Operating System inside the host OS.
Do routine updates, patches and workarounds as needed.
Attend to problem tickets, answer calls from users requesting assistance.
Setup and configure desktop virtualization for specialized purposes
Used Vmware, VirtualBox and Parallels Desktop virtualization solutions to address the need of users to run cross-platform applications.
To replicate an environment for sake of research and problem resolution
To securely test an application on a particular platform so as not to compromise the host system
Setup and configure storage area networks (SANs)
Configure iSCSI targets and FCoE on FreeBSD and Linux platforms
Configure network switches, routers, network interface cards, Host Bus Adapters
Able to work with ZFS-based SAN
Configure SMB/CIFS, FTP, AFS, HTTP access as required
Design and implement a clustered computing environment using the OpenMosix Technology for the Bioinformatics group.
introduced me to a new world of high power computing (HPC)
eventually led me to a thorough understanding of computer clusters which are essential in a computing-intensive field such as bioinformatics.
involved me in kernel configuration and rebuilds
exposed me more intensively to Linux (SUSE Linux) and to key OpenSource technologies such as GCC, Perl, PHP and Apache.
Setup and configure data storage systems for the OpenMosix Cluster. Knowledge in RAID, UFS, NFS, VFS, and filesystems in general, are necessary to complete this task.
Led to my deeper understanding on unix filesystems
Learned the use and application of disk striping, mirroring, spanning and the importance of virtual file systems for large enterprise systems
Learned the standard data backup procedures and used my scripting skills to automate backups.
The OpenMosix cluster is attach to storage systems through fiber optic links, thus:
had the opportunity to develop skills on fiber optic technologies
gained knowledge and experience on implementation of industrial optical network equipment.
Had experience on install, setup, configure and troubleshoot fiber optic links.
Mirror (and keep it up-to-date) the UCSC genomic database, which is a very huge and complex database of genomes of various organisms including human.
broaden my knowledge in databases, specifically MySql and Postgresql
setup and configured Unix systems (FreeBSD) to host the mirror site.
applied my knowledge on Apache web server to put up the mirror site.
used OpenSource application such as Rsync to make our copy in sync to the master site and wrote scripts to automate this task
Other duties include(in order of relevance):
Troubleshoot network issues and anomalies such as bandwidth wastes caused by malicious traffic, misconfigurations, and hardware failure. This task usually involves router/switch skills and knowledge of internetworking technologies.
Provide technical assistance with regards to campus-wide communications. This requires knowledge in file servers, directory services (LDAP), email and ip telephony (VOIP) systems.
Ensure availability of campus core services including but not limited to DNS, DHCP, VPN, firewall, proxy, web, email and print servers.

Writes proper documentation of systems incidents and issues with detailed solutions and/or workarounds
Schedule a downtime for system maintenance. Such event is well-planned; announced to all users concerned; and done in a time of least impact to users.
Used a simple database to tabulate records of problems and solutions for efficient future troubleshooting reference.
Performs regular systems hardware and software inventory and upgrades. Such records are also stored in a database.
Automate programmable system checks and backups. This involves writing scripts
