I have worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (researching several aspects of the Affordable Care Act), for Boling & Company (a health-law focused law firm), and for a solo practitioner (researching a narrow area of tort law). Georgia Lawyers for the Arts, Extern: Atlanta, GA Fall 2014 I took intake from potential clients, determined possible legal issues (including those related to copyright, trademark, employment, contracts), and conducted in-person interviews. Upon concluding a ripe legal issue existed, I sought appropriate lawyers from GLA’s membership, communicated issue and conflict information, and placed the client (pro bono or paid referral). US Department of Veterans Affairs, Regional Counsel, Extern: Atlanta, GA Summer 2014 I worked on projects in three areas: 1) benefits (wrote a research brief on the Affordable Care Act’s effect on benefits determinations involving pre-existing conditions); 2) employment (worked on several cases involving alleged wrongful termination; researched case materials and relevant law; prepared court documents); and 3) torts (worked on several cases, participated in interviews with claimants, researched relevant laws). All of these projects involved claims by veterans, and included extensive research, writing, and engagement with the VA Regional Counsel’s case management software.
