Chief Engineer – Sunroof Products

oDeveloped new sunroof designs for the Chinese OEM market

Designed, fabricated (using the latest in 3D printer technology including plastic filaments, stainless steel powder and traditional methods of prototyping) and assembled new sunroof mechanisms in North America

Created prove-out fixtures and tested concepts in North America

Identified and located a Chinese assembly line fabricator. Developed (and delivered) a completely new assembly line to our Chinese factory. Sunroofs were successfully built and tested online.

Trained Chinese team throughout the development process. Numerous trips were made to the China Headquarters (Ninghai) where training and brainstorming sessions took place.

oPersonally relocated to Imlay City to manage this acquisition by Atwood

oGoal: ‘Atwood-ize’ the 25 year old family business in line with company goals

oLead the organization of 50 production and office staff while reducing costs and increasing EBITDA (2010 - $0.5M, 2011 - $0.7M, 2012 - $2.5M)

oCo-authored/developed two patents (design and utility) for a new product that was taken from concept to production in less than one year.

Created low cost duplicate (temporary) equipment in Elkhart so as not to interrupt customer supply. Relocated material, inventory and built safety stock.

Chief Representative - Shanghai Purchasing Office 2008 - 2012

oWhile Director of Engineering, over a 2-year period, traveled regularly to Shanghai, China, with the goal of setting up and staffing a Purchasing Office to reduce component costs and source high volume key parts. Officially registered as Chief Representative and maintained responsibility for international administration of personnel. Detailed project results:

Investigated and located an affordable office space

Officially registered the business with Chinese government

Laid out and furnished complete office

Established IT equipment, local support and communication with the US

Established the new component Purchasing Office comprised of an Office Manager, a Quality Engineer, a Logistics Manager and two Purchasing Agents. Interviewed and hired this team of Chinese citizens

Director of Engineering 2007 – 2012

oReduced costs by downsizing department (from 53 to 15 engineers, designers and technicians due to the economic downturn) while maintaining complete customer support and new product development projects

Established an off-shore (India) engineering relationship that included a team in India and an in-house (Elkhart, IN) design engineer.

Eliminated discretionary spending/travel

Expanded responsibilities and improved communications via regular group meetings

China Integration Manager, Shifter and Cable Operations March 2005 – 2007

Regularly traveled to and was responsible for operational improvements of two joint venture facilities in Shanghai, China. Plants were operating in a non-automotive, non-QS9000/TS16949 compliant manner. Quality, manufacturing and design operating systems had to be evaluated and improvement plans put in place to make the facilities acceptable to International OEM standards. Installed a Quality Operating System for measurement and reporting of plant performance. Implemented a continuous improvement plan for tracking and follow-up. Transformed the plants using 5S methodologies and practices. Passed major OEM audits and was successfully awarded new business from International OEM’s. Coordinated manufacturing information flow between China and the rest of the organization in the U.S.

Directed and supervised teams of engineers and designers responsible for OE designs and customer support. Coordinated programs with various production facilities throughout the US and Mexico. Product lines included; window regulators, encapsulated glass, ATX and MTX cables, hood release and various other light duty cables. Managed the downsizing and ultimate closing of assorted operations during a corporate reorganization.

Member of the original team hired to establish a North American Center of Expertise for sunroof design and production (Corp HQ: Frankfurt, Germany). Responsible for setting up (hiring people, buying equipment, establishing (QS9000/Q1 systems) and managing the following departments:

Accountable for the administration of a $4,500,000+ budget which included wages, tooling, equipment and supplies. Directed the design and development of new sunroof products in accordance with North American automotive standards. Developed long term relationships with Ford, GM, DaimlerChrysler, Nissan, Mercedes and BMW that resulted in year after year business growth (1992 sales $15M, 2000 sales $100M). Lead North American advanced engineering effort and developed new products and new product features resulting in personally authoring or co-authoring 50+ patent innovation disclosures. Corporate member of the Intellectual Property Committee responsible for reviewing and approving all patent submissions.
