CARDIOTHORACIC SURGERY & INTENSIVE CARE
I am proud to be associated with DMIMS rural medical college as an Assistant Professor. I
attend outdoor patient as well as indoor patients. I have operated approximately 100 cases of open heart
surgery cases independently in 2 years of my stay here. I have good experience of MAZE procedure
being done at this center and also paediatric and adult cases performed.
IN UNITED KINGDOM
I had the pleasure of working at University hospitals of Leicester, Glenfield hospital in adult
cardiac surgery with Mr Richard Firmin. I got to further my surgical skills and also learnt the finer
details of adult cardiac surgical and intensive care management. I got hands on experience in coronary
artery bypass surgery, valvular repairs apart from replacements and aortic surgery. I also had the
experience of operating and managing Type A dissection patients.
I was fortunate enough to be trained in ECMO specialist course where I had didactic lectures
and hands on practical experience. I wish to use this knowledge of ECMO in pulmonary diseases and as
a bridge to cardiac transplantation .
I was fortunate to be trained by Mr Ramesh Patel, mitral valve repair surgeon at Coventry,UK
IN GERMANY
I was pleased to attend observership at LEIPZIG and was fortunate to work with world famous
Prof Mohr who is the pioneer in minimally invasive cardiac surgery
IN INDIA
I was working as a junior consultant in adult cardiac surgical unit at Fortis Escorts Heart
Institute and Research center, Nagpur. I pre assessed the patients for surgery, posted them, assisted in
surgeries as a first assistant as well as performing some valve replacement operation and bypass surgery
under supervision, following patients post operatively till discharge and post discharge .We performed
close to 2530 cases a month,98% are off pump CABG. I have performed sternotomies, harvesting
internal mammary artery (both left and right) and veins as a conduit and performing proximal
anastomosis at times distal anastomosis and subsequently closing the chest.
I have been fortunate to undergo the training of oneyear duration namely cardiac surgery in
Apollo Hospitals, Chennai with Padmashri Dr M R Girinath. Apollo hospital is a 610bedded J.C.I.
(Joint commission International) accredited hospital. The cardio thoracic unit is one of the best in India.
Page: 4
They perform 1900 openheart operations every year. In the year 20082009 we had completed 2000
cardiac cases. They have completed 28,000 cardiac surgical procedures since their inception in 1983.
70% of the work is adult and 30% paediatric. We did 99% of the coronary bypass grafting cases off
pump.
My responsibilities involved clerking the surgical patient on admission, deciding on the routine or specially
indicated preoperative workup and following them postoperatively till they get discharged. My duty in the theater
consisted of harvesting all conduits including left internal mammary artery, assisting the senior consultant in doing
the procedure, doing distal anastomosis under supervision, and completing the case by doing the proximal
anastomosis. I have done atrial septal defect closures and valve replacements. I was periodically posted for duties
in our 30-bedded ICU and have managed both pediatric and adult cardiac cases.
I performed elective and emergency cases both supervised. Here in Apollo Hospitals my vision
has expanded and I have learnt management of cardiac patients through a different perspective.
I also consider myself fortunate to have worked with Dr RajanSantosham, world acclaimed
thoracic surgeon at par excellence in Chennai.
Topiwala National Medical College and B Y L Nair Charitable hospital affiliated to university
of Mumbai is a 1229 bedded multispeciality university hospital and a tertiary referral center.I have been
trained in the safe conduct of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery for routine and emergency cases
under supervision. I have conducted and assisted adult as well as congenital cardiac cases. I have learnt
the technique of cardiopulmonary bypass. To assess the patients pre operatively, evaluate them and also
follow up them post operatively was my duty.I have learnt thoracoscopic surgery and thoracotomy
approaches as well. I have performed lobectomies, pneumonectomy, decortications and also
bronchoscopies.
Attending A & E and resuscitation calls, assisting routine operation theatre in multi disciplinary
team, both supervised and solo lists. Making Rota and allocation duties to junior doctors according to
their competency was also a part of the training.
INTENSIVE CARE MEDICINE
Apart from work in ICU I was actively involved in the post of management of ICU patients.
EXPERIENCE IN OTHER SPECIALITIES OF MEDICINE
Medical Officer: One year of experience in remote rural hospital in tribal area of Gadchiroli
has taught me the essence of human life. My time in general medicine gave me exposure to great deal of
acute and chronic medical problems and also of infectious diseases like tuberculosis, leprosy, and
malaria, which are quite prevalent in India. It has provided me great deal of experience in ward work
such clerking patients, intravenous cannulation and suturing.

RESEARCH AND AUDIT
Audit work2011at Glenfield hospital, cardiac surgery departmental postoperative bloodtesting
(POBT). Anecdotally POBT is excessive and patient discomfort, time and money could be saved by
auditing current practice.
1. Retrospectively collected data defined current practice.
2. A uniform protocol for POBT was proposed.
3. The data demonstrates that application of this practice would reduce the number of POBT and that
importantly no significantly abnormal or deteriorating results would be missed as a consequence.
4. The results will be reported and a program of appropriate staff education designed to promote the
change in practice.
5. Reaudit will be performed after three months of the new practice

Dissertation and ResearchThe study of outcome of 19 mm mechanical prosthesis in
aortic positionJuly 2006
This study was carried out to show the feasibility of using 19mm valve in aortic position without
significantly causing patient prosthesis mismatch. The study involved patients from rural remote area of
india who have small body surface area.
Dissertation and ResearchThe role of Ultrasonography in Abdominal trauma July 2001
