Research Experience:
Undergraduate Research September 2015 – March 2016
University of Washington Bothell
Project 1 – Drug Discovery (dry lab)
Successfully discovered novel ligands to act as competitive inhibitors for the 1GTV enzyme in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, using various protein databases and online analysis servers.
Project2 – coevolution in microbes (wet lab)
Grew cocultures of archea and bacteria for varying amounts of generations.
Separated the archea from the bacteria in the cocultures by using different antibiotics to produce monocultures of the species.
Recombined the archea and bacteria into various combinations and recorded their growth until they reached the stationary phase of their growth cycle.
Used anaerobic sterile techniques to reduce exposure to oxygen as much as possible, which included the use of syringes and nitrogen gas to expel any oxygen in the syringe before use
Used Excel extensively to analyze the data gathered from the experiment.
Project3 – molecular dynamics (dry lab)
Performed analysis of the genetic mutations during the evolution of the cocultures containing archea and bacteria.
Used a program called MobaXterm, which used Linux command lines to run scripts, which would perform various analysis procedures on the genomic sequences that were recovered after sequencing each culture, and used Excel to analyze the data output.
