Philosophy of Primary Care
My philosophy of advanced practice nursing is based on Parse’s Human Becoming
Theory, which provides provision for the voice of the client to be heard and their
desires to be respected. Like Parse, I believe that if a person changes, it is due to
the discovery of their true intrinsic value. This provides an opportunity to be truly
“present” with the person and to encourage health as a process of becoming
(Pilkington, 1999).
Health and wellness is a process that requires an individual to make conscious and
deliberate decisions in order to lead a more satisfying lifestyle. My patients can
expect to gain insight on how to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle by changing
health habits such as: sleep, exercise, nutrition, social and supportive relationships.
Barriers to health promotion can include a lack of client motivation, lack of
reimbursement, and a lack of health promotion programs within the community. As a
facilitator for the integration of health promotion, I will make the appropriate referrals
with other disciplines that can assist my patients in making these essential changes.
The health and wellness of my patients will be promoted through a non-routinized,
compassionate, client-centered care that encompasses a warm and caring
environment. My patients can expect a respectful, competent health care provider
that believes health and wellness is a continuum influenced by much more than just
diagnosing and prescribing. It is my personal commitment to positively direct and
encourage my patients to achieve their maximum health potential.
In order to be at the forefront of raising the standards of care, my practice will be
governed according to evidence based guidelines; this will ensure that the care I
